Northwest Airlines - The First Eighty Years: Images of America
Jones, Geoff
Since flying its first mail flight on October l, 1926, Northwest Airways, now known as Northwest Airlines, has grown to become one of the world's leading airlines. Northwest's legacy of leadership in the aviation industry began with its foundation in the Twin Cities and extended to its pioneering work as part of the U.S. war effort in Alaska, the establishment of the first U.S. commercial air links to Japan and the Orient, and its groundbreaking 1992 alliance and award of anti-trust immunity with KLM/Royal Dutch Airlines.
Northwest is now America's oldest air carrier with continuous name identification. In celebration of the airline's 80th anniversary in 2006, this book chronicles the remarkable years during which Northwest became an institutional backbone of both American and worldwide air transport history.
This diverse historical tribute relies heavily on the author's own photo archive along with images supplied by the exceptional Northwest History Centre Inc., established in October 2002 to preserve the airline's rich heritage. The rare photographs seen in these pages, accompanied by a detailed and informative narrative, bring together for the first time all of the elements of the Northwest "family," which includes Hughes Air West and Republic Airlines and their predecessors.

Northwest Orient
Yenne, Bill
The story of Northwest Orient Airlines is the story of a dream fulfilled, of aviation pioneersjn America's Old Northwest who had a distant goal, a Northwest Passage to the mysterious Orient. It is also the story of a fledgling air mail carrier that grew into a profitable international airline.
Northwest began with a pilot, a dream, and no planes. With two borrowed biplanes, the Company initiated air mail service out of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St Paul to Chicago in 1926. Sixty years later, Northwest is one of America's largest airlines, with over 140 modern Jets flying an elaborate route structure that serves North America, Western Europe and the Far East, where it is the dominant US carrier.
This book chronicles that growth from the early days of seat-of-the-pants, open-cockpit flying to the comfortable, computer-ized 'Jumbo Jet' age.

Pan American in Norway: 1935-1991
Mulder, Rob J.M.
First Edition

This book is about the trials to open an air service between Norway and the USA. One’s the world’s largest airlines with a network spanning the world: Pan American Airways. The history of this airline is without doubt very interesting. A service to the small country of Norway was just one of the air services operated, but generated some 30,000 to 50,000 passengers per year. In this special magazine, we take a look at the history of Pan American World Airways and its routes to Norway.

How diverse its history is can be understood, when we ask you the following question: when was the first air service to be inaugurated: 1936? 1940? 1946? You might be interested to know that Pan American Airways as early as the 1936 wanted to start a trial service and in 1940 actually an air service, but it had to wait until after the Second World War. Its fascinating story is told here, all the way until the end in 1991.

The author describes the intense conversation between the Nordic airline companies and Pan American Airways before the war and gives a historic detailed description of the post-war development, including many photographs, timetables, posters and advertisments from that time. Pages are dedicated to marketing and sales, the Oslo office and its two most well-known directors: Derek L Blix and Berit Sjølund. A final chapter describes the work of the World Wings International, the Norwegian Chapter, the association of former Pan Am stewardesses. The softback magazine includes a beautifult paiting of the Norwegian Sikorsky S-43, LN-DAG “Valkyrien”. Plenty to read and look at.

Pioniere der Luftbrücke
Allierten Museum Berlin (Hrsg)

Propellerfaszination - klassische Propellerverkehrsflugzeuge heute: Vickers Viscount - Douglas DC 3 - Antonow AN 2
Fink, Franz
Erstausgabe

Rising Above the Clouds: The Story of Turkish Airlines' Transformation
Kozlu, Cem (chairman and president of Turkish Airlines)
First english language edition.

In 1988, Turkish Airlines (THY) was a loss-making state-run Company with 27 airplanes of six different types. It flew to 57 points in Turkey and nearby countries. It had an unenviable Image, such that irate passengers had nicknamed it (T)hey (H)ate (Y)ou Airlines. Today its 103-strong fleet flies to 138 points in a network stretching from Tokyo to Chicago. Its Image has soared. Its growth rate is at least twice the European average. Although still state-controlled, it is consistently profitable.
A team led by the author initiated this transformation. This is the story of that effort and the various major crises THY subsequently flew through. As a management "case" it is already being used in university courses. It is also an entertaining yarn with many colorful characters such as prime minister Turgut Özal. Its radar sweeps over many events and developments in global civil aviation during the 1988-2003 period.
During his career Gern Kozlu has served äs a Member of the Turkish Parliament, Chairman and CEO of Turkish Airlines, Chairman of the Association of European Airlines (AEA), and as Group President of the Coca-Cola Company. He is currently on the Board of Directors of the International Airline Training Fund (IATF) (GH) and TAV Airports Holding A.§. "Rising Above The Clouds" is his sixth book.

Strassen der Zukunft: Querschnitt der modernene Luftfahrt
Picht, Wolf Dietrich

The Concorde Story: Includes an Account of the tragedy at Paris, the Accident Investigation and Concorde's Return to Service
Orlebar, Christopher (Concorde Captain)
Extended and updated Fifth Edition

Since 1976, when commercial Services began, Concorde has established herself As one of the wonders of the modern technical world. Flying at speeds in excess of Mach 2 she is the first, and at the moment only, commercial airliner capable of achieving twice the speed of sound. Over the years Concorde has vindicated the faith of those who carried the project through, often in the face of fierce opposition. As a former Concorde pilot, the author Christopher Orlebar uses his wide experience and insight to recount The Concorde Story.
From the signing of the Anglo-French alliance, the book traces Concorde from inception to prototype construction, first flights, the pre-production and production aircraft through to Concorde's current operations and commercial success. Chapters outline the theory and dynamics of supersonic flight and chart the history of attempts to break the sound barrier. Also described are other SST (supersonic transport) projects which never progressed beyond the model stage and the single design which did, Russia's Tupolev Tu 144 'Concordski'.
The book also considers what it takes to become a pilot of the world's fastest airliner. Specifications and data are included as well as a pilot's eye view of a flight from London to New York. Later chapters comment on Concorde's possible successors, including a look at suborbital flight. With reference to the official report, much consideration is given to the tragic event at Gonesse in July 2000 and the remedies subsequently applied.
The text is backed by a wealth of illustrations, colour photographs and charts; many reproduced from the archives of the manufacturers and operators British Airways and Air France. This fifth edition provides a comprehensive and enlightened insight into the Concorde story, sufficient for any enthusiast, young or old.

The Sky Their Frontier: The Story of the World's Pioneer Airlines and Routes 1920-1940
Jackson, Robert
By 1918, only fifteen years since the Wright brothers made their historic flight at Kitty Hawk, aviation was no longer in its infancy. The demands of total war had turned the aircraft into a killing machine of awesome potential. On the other hand, the aircraft's usefulness as a source of commercial revenue had yet to be explored, and in this context the obstacles seemed almost insurmountable. Commercial aircraft had to have range, speed and adequate size; they had to be able to fly in all kinds of climatic conditions, transporting their payloads efficiently and in safety.

At the end of the First World War, no such aircraft existed. Yet only a decade later a new generation of airlmers was plying the world's embryo air routes, and new and exciting machines capable of spanning the great oceans were on the drawing boards. It was one of mankind's greatest technological triumphs, and one that would not have been possible without the courage and determination of a relatively small band of men; not only the aircrews, but also the managers of the world's pioneer airlines and the fmanciers who were prepared to stake fortunes on what was then very much an unknown quantity.
In The Sky Their Frontier, Robert Jackson tells the full story of the development of civil aviation throughout the world, during the formative years between 1920 and 1940. lt is a story of men and machines, braving enormous hazards to carve out regular air Services across the Atlantic and Pacific, the vastness of the Asian and African continents, and exploring the air links between east and west over the icy wastes of the Polar regions. The tale was often one of disaster, of machines and crews disappearing without trace over ocean, desert or jungle. But the quest continued; as man's quest for knowledge and advancement will always continue.
The fruits of that quest are visible throughout the world today, in the contrails of the great iet airliners that carve their passage through the stratosphere six miles and more above the earth. It should never be forgotton that in the shadow of those contrails fly the ghost of airliners of times long past, and of the gallant pioneers who flew them.

The Vectis Connection: Pioneering Isle of Wight Air Services
Newberry, Peter
First Edition.

Since the dawn of aviation in the early 20th Century the Isle of Wight has been in the forefront of development, both in military and civil aviation. Nowhere else in the United Kingdom has there been such a concentration of aircraft manufacturers as in the Solent area and on this small island alone the industry has been represented by such companies as J.Samuel White, R.E.Saunders (later Saunders Roe), Westland Aircraft and its subsidiary British Hovercraft Corporation and of course Britten Norman, builders of Britain's most successful post war light transports, the Islander and Trilander.
The book traces the development of civil and commercial aviation on the Island from the Hon. C.S.Rolls balloon flight across the Solent to the establishment in the early 1930's of pioneering airlines that operated to the Isle of Wight. The airlines were Portsmouth, Southsea and Isle of Wight Aviation, Spartan Airlines, Railway Air Services, Channel Air Fernes and Great Western and Southern Airlines. Despite the complete lack of navigation and approach aids very few schedules were cancelled and regularity was in excess of 90% - a remarkable achievement. By the middle 1930's it was possible to fly from the Island to the Channel Islands, Lands End, Belfast and the Scottish Isles. Connections were also available via Croydon for flights to the then Empire.
Apart from Chris Balfour's excellent book 'Spithead Express' which exclusively covers the history of Portsmouth, Southsea and Isle of Wight Aviation, to the author's knowledge nothing has been published covering the development of civil aviation and the airlines that operated to the Island. The book also covers the airports of Ryde, Shanklin, Sandown, Cowes, and on the mainland, Bournemouth, Southampton, Portsmouth and Shoreham. The history closes in 1939 when on the outbreak of war all civil flying to the Isle of Wight ceased for the duration. Post war no scheduled Services have operated across the Solent, as with the growth of car ownership and supporting car ferries, air travel over such a short distance in not viable.

TransBrazil - An Airline and its Aircraft: Brazil's Rainbow Airline
Davies, R.E.G. (Author) - Machat, Mike (Illustrations)
bi-language edition: English - Portuguese

This is the sixth in our series of books on the Great Airlines of the World, and is notable for three reasons: it is our first venture into Latin America; the first book to be printed in two languages; and the first time that Paladwr Press has asked artist Mike Machat to portray every color scheme, rather than a selection of the ones in general use by each aircraft type.
Machat's Law states that, of any single type of airliner, no two aircraft in the service of a Company are painted exactly the same. Now, with TransBrasil, our artist has had a field day - or, rather, several months of intriguing and dedicated effort. Because, for several years, every Sadia or TransBrasil individual airplane was graced with a different color scheme. Several of them had more than one each. The Boeing 727 alone had no less than nineteen.
Such an approach reflects the colorful personality and romantic nature of the airline's founder. Dr. Omar Fontana has guided the fortunes of his airline through thick and thin, during a period of four decades. He started with a single Douglas DC-3, borrowed for a weekend to test out a brilliant idea, and now operates a handsome fleet which includes long-range Boeing 767ERs on intercontinental prestige routes.
Paladwr Press was well supported from the airline's own records, and was also been aided by the world-wide fraternity of airline enthusiasts, whose combined researches have been augmented by our Technical Editor, John Wegg. Tracing the ancestry and subsequent fate of some of the Veteran aircraft was a task that would have daunted Sherlock Holmes himself.
Today's aircraft now have a standard color design on their tails, still echoing Fontana's desire for dramatic presentation, but also providing the unofficial description of TransBrasil as the Rainbow Airline.

Vickers Vimy
Bruce, J.M.
The Vickers Vimy was a two-engined British heavy bomber aircraft. Developed late in WWI the aircraft was operationally ready only after the Armistice of November 11, 1918. So the Vinmy did not see combat but became the core of the Royal Air Force heavy bomber force throughout the 1920s.
The Vimy is best known for the first non-stop crossing of the North Atlantic Ocean by John Alcock and Arthur Brown in 1919. The aircarft type made more record flights from England to South Africa and Australia.
