The last of the Bush Pilots: The flyers who matched their skills against the challenge of the Arctic
Helmericks, Harmon
Bantam Air & Space Series 1
This book was first published in 1969

The twentieth Century has bred a new race of men - men who fly - men who have developed an astonishing range of skills and daring to match the astounding pace of technological development that has come from the Wright brothers' 30-mile-an-hour 350-foot flight to landing an astronaut on the moon.
After World War II the greatest challenge for any civilian pilot lay in the far North, flying missions that taxed the best of their piloting skills and courage. They learned to navigate their little planes under icy conditions of murderous white-fog, mountainous terrain and horrendous weather. Whatever else the Arctic demanded of them, the first commandment of staying alive was that they know how to fly.
This is the thrilling story of one such pilot.

The Lion Killers: Billy Mitchell and the Birth of Strategic Bombing
Schwarzer, William
Second Edition.

This is a story about the birth of air power and the people who fought for its existence. One such man was William "Billy" Mitchell. A staunch advocate of air power, Mitchell's ideas were controversial in a time when the General and the Admiral were deemed the sole proprietors of modern warfare.
The bombing lest that took place off the Outer Banks in 1923 proved conclusively the strength and future of air power. This is a history uniquely American. It includes the faces and stories of a small coastal Community, of world leaders, and of the man who brought them together.
Mitchell was the first to understand the full military potential of aircraft prior to the Second World War. His many articles, speeches, and his historic bombing trials eventually proved the need for an Air Force.
To some, he is the heroic lone patriot fighting against bureaucracy and military politics for the good of national security. To other, Mitchell is nothing more than an egotistical charlatan, more interested in grand standing than the future of air power. Regardless, William Mitchell, was a visionary in a complex time, and a soldier dedicated to his country.

The Rocket Man: And Other Extraordinary Characters in the History of Flight
Darling, David
The wonder of flight has long captured the human Imagination. In this beguiling history - ranging from the first aircraft to astronauts and beyond - David Darling tells the stories of the true life adventurers whose wonder has translated into bizarre contraptions, magnificent achievements and, sometimes, startling folly.
Discover outrageous attempts to fly like a bird and fall from the edge of space. Meet Napoleonic ballooniste Sophie Blanchard and her daredevil husband; the real "X-Men" who flew the supersonic experimental "X-planes" for the US Air Force; Stuntman Lincoln Beachey, looping-the-loop in a pinstripe suit; and, of course, The Rocket Man himself: Yves Rossy, who in 2006 was the first person to cross the English Channel using a jet-pack.
Eccentric and reckless, Darling's daring cast of dreamers is guaranteed to entertain and inspire.

The Wandering Years
Affleck, Arthur H.
First Edition.

This factual and human account of the beginnings of commercial aviation in Australia, and its development during a period of over 40 years, presents a fascinating and little known picture.
By portraying it in the form of a partial autobiography enlivened with anecdotes of characters and incidents encountered during the course of his aviation career, the author has succeeded in covering an historical skeleton with the living flesh and blood of personality and humour. As a prologue he has told the story surrounding one of the early flights of the world's first aerial medical service. He then tells how he came to be the pilot of the aeroplane concerned in this flight and, in the telling, shows how, from a haphazard beginning with surplus military aircraft from World War I and pilots completely inexperienced in the Job of flying these aeroplanes commercially and, in many instances, even lacking experience in the ways of the air, Australian civil aviation has come to occupy the proud Position of first amongst the nations of the world with its record of air safety. As he moves from one operating company to another and from the role of active airline pilot to that of flying administration and the formulation of aviation policy, the author takes the reader from Victoria to Queensland, the Northern Territory, early New Guinea, Western Australia, back to Victoria and on to New South Wales, finishing the story in the New Guinea of today.
Of special interest are the chapters covering the first four years of the world-famous Flying Doctor Service - told, for the first time, from the pilot's viewpoint.

Über den Wolken unter den Wellen
Piccard, Auguste
Erstausgabe

Unbroken: Louis Zamperini - An Extraordinary True Story of Courage and Survival
Hillenbrand, Laura
"One of the most remarkable survival tales ever recorded."

On a May afternoon in 1943, a US bomber crashed into the
Pacific Ocean. After an agonising delay, a young lieutenant
finally bobbed to the surface and struggled aboard a life raft. So began one of the most extraordinary odysseys of the Second World War. The lieutenant's name was Louis Zamperini. As a boy, he turned to petty crime until he discovered a remarkable talent for running, which took him to the Berlin Olympics. But as war loomed, he joined up and was soon embroiled in the ferocious battle for the Pacific.
Now Zamperini faced a journey of thousands of miles of open ocean on a failing raft, dogged by sharks, starvation and the enemy. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini's fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would depend on the strength of his will...

Verdict on a Lost Flyer: The Story of Bill Lancaster
Barker, Ralph
Captain 'Bill' Lancaster, pipneer flyer of the twenties and thirties, disappeared on a flight over the Sahara in 1933. It was twenty-nine years before his body wasfound beside his wrecked plane; a log-book, tied to the wing, contained the calm yet moving record of his wait for death.
Bill Lancaster's dramatic end was in keeping with his adventurous and colourful life. His Service career established his reputation as a man without fear, and when he left the R.A.F. in 1926 he turned to trail blazing. An attempt to be the first man to fly a light plane to Australia involved him with a top woman flyer, 'Chubbie' Miller and, neglecting their families, the pair lived and flew together for four years until the depression forced Lancaster to leave in search of work.
How Bill Lancaster made a desperate effort to retrieve his fortunes, how Chubbie fell in love with an American writer, Haden Clarke, while he was away, and how Clarke was shot dead on Lancaster's return, leads up to the first full account of one of the most sensational murder trials of the Century. A story as exciting as the age it is set in, its unique denouement leaves the reader free to pronounce his own verdict on Bill Lancaster, pioneer flyer and adventurer.

The Author:
A wartime wireless operator/air gunner, Ralph Barker retired from the R.A.F. in 1961 to become a full time writer. His books include Down in the Drink and The Thousand Plan, the story of the first 1,000-bomber raid. In addition to his many wartime and air force stories he is the author of two books on cricket, his main recreation.

Von Braun: Dreamer of Space, Engineer of War
Neufeld, Michael J.
Based on new sources - a brilliant portait.

The first authoritative biography of Wernher von Braun, chief rocket engineer of the Third Reich - creator of the infamous V-2 rocket - who became one of the fathers of the U.S. space program. In this meticulously researched and vividly written life, Michael J. Neufeld gives us a man of profound moral complexities, glorified as a visionary and vilified as a war criminal, a man whose brilliance and charisma were coupled with an enormous and, some would say, blinding ambition.
As one of the leading developers of rocket technology for the German army, von Braun yielded to pressure to join the Nazi Party in 1937 and reluctantly became an SS officer in 1940. During the war, he supervised work on the V-2s, which were assembled by starving slave laborers in a secret underground plant and then fired against London and Antwerp. Thousands of prisoners died - a fact he well knew and kept silent about for as long as possible.
When the Allies overran Germany, von Braun and his team surrendered to the Americans. The U.S. Army immediately recognized his skills and brought him and his colleagues to America to work on the development of guided missiles, in a covert operation that became known as Project Paperclip. He helped launch the first American satellite in 1958 and headed NASA's launch-vehicle development for the Apollo Moon landing.
Handsome and likable, von Braun dedicated himself to selling the American public on interplanetary travel and became a household name in the 1950s, appearing on Disney TV shows and writing for popular magazines. But he never fully escaped his past, and in later years he faced increasing questions as his wartime actions slowly came to light.
Based on new sources, "Von Braun" is a brilliantly nuanced portrait of a man caught between morality and progress, between his dreams of the heavens and the earthbound realities of his life.

The Author Michael J. Neufeld is chair of the Space History Division of the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum.

Wake Island Pilot: A World War II Memoir
Kinney, John F. (Brig. Gen. USMC ret.) - McCaffrey, James M.
First Edition.
Wake Island Pilot is the story of John F. Kinney - hero, POW, escapee, and aviation pioneer. It contains the first full-length account of a successful escape by a Marine captured in one of the great battles of World War II.
Within hours of the Pearl Harbor attack, the Japanese struck the small U.S. garrison on Wake Island. As his squadron's engineering officer, young pilot John F. Kinney used all his considerable ingenuity to oversee the cannibalization of crippled planes for spare parts - when he himself was not in the air fighting off the Japanese assault. His gallant efforts helped enable the desperate Marine and Navy defenders to hold out for an incredible two weeks, a truly epic struggle.
After the island's inevitable surrender, Kinney was a Japanese prisoner in China for the next three and a half years. During this time, he put his amazingly inventive mechanical skills to work, creating from scratch numerous items to improve his fellow POWs' Situation, induding a radio. Toward the end of the war, Kinney escaped from a prison train and, with the assistance of both Nationalist and Communist Chinese troops, made his way to an American airfield. He was thus one of the very few Americans to escape from Japanese captivity outside the Philippines. General Kinney's subsequent Marine Corps career was equally distinguished: He flew fighters in the Korean War and helped develop the classic A4-D Skyhawk. With a foreword by Donald M. Goldstein, coauthor of Mirade at Midway, Wake Island Pilot makes great reading for the aviation and military history buff.

Whistled Like a Bird: The Untold Story of Dorothy Putnam, George Putnam, and Amelia Earhart
Putnam Chapman, Sally - Mansfield, Stephanie
First Edition.
Chapman has always been fascinated by her family history, particularly her paternal grandparents' complicated relationships with Amelia Earhart, so she was deeply moved when her grandmother, Dorothy Binney Putnam, gave her 10 diaries chronicling the years 1907 through 1961. During those exciting and emotionally exhausting decades, Dorothy--an accomplished musician, a society figure, an outdoorswoman and traveler, and an "incurable romantic" --graduated from Wellesley, married George Putnam of the distinguished publishing dynasty, had children, befriended Earhart at the dawn of her fame, and then watched the aviatrix not only attain near-goddess status but also steal her husband. Dorothy's side of this once-notorious love triangle has never been well understood, and Chapman's amazement over what she discovered in her grandmother's succinct but revealing diary entries adds great poignancy to a love story that would be compelling even if it were written as blandly as a shopping list. Putnam was a total workaholic, and long before Earhart entered the picture, Dorothy's frustration over the vapidity of her high-society duties and the bloodlessness of her marriage had led to an ardent affair with a younger man and thoughts of divorce. Chapman's sensitive and proud portrait of her passionate grandmother offers fresh takes on Earhart, Putnam, and the eternal mystery of love.

Pabst, Martin
1. Auflage

Wings of Madness: Alberto Santos-Dumont and the Invention of Flight
Hoffman, Paul
The story of man's struggle to fly is full of larger-than-life personalities, but none was so eccentric, so entertaining or so complex as Alberto Santos-Dumont, the Brazilian 'father of aviation'. An engineer and dandy, Santos-Dumont was the darling of the international press in the first decade of the twentieth Century, hopping from Parisian restaurant to nightclub in his personal flying machine, circling the Eiffel Tower in his balloon No. 6 or dining with the Rothschilds and Roosevelts.
Yet Santos-Dumont was a troubled genius. Depressed by the success of the Wright brothers in Kitty Hawk and by the increasing militarisation of flight, he retreated to European Sanatoriums throughout the 1920s, returning to Brazil only to be confronted by the horrors of civil war. Paul Hoffman teils the tale of Santos-Dumont and modern flight with wit and sympathy, showing us how often brilliance is coupled with tragedy.

Yeager: An Autobiography
Yeager, Chuck - Janos, Leo
Chuck Yeager was the first man to fly faster than the speed of sound in 1947. This book is the adventure of his life...

General Chuck Yeager, the greatest test pilot of them all - the first man to fly faster than the speed of sound...the World War II flying ace who shot down a Messerschmitt jet with a prop-driven P-51 Mustang...the hero who defined a certain quality that all the hotshot fly-boys of the postwar era aimed to achieve: the right stuff.
Now Chuck Yeager tells his whole incredible life story with the same "wide-open, full throttle" approach that has marked his astonishing career. What it was really like engaging in do-or-die dogfights over Nazi Europe. How, after being shot down over occupied France, Yeager somehow managed to escape. The amazing behind-the-scenes story of smashing the sound barrier despite cracked ribs from a riding accident days before. The entire story is here, in Yeager's own words, and in wonderful insights from his wife and those friends and colleagues who have known him best. It is the personal and public story of a man who settled for nothing less than excellence, a one-of-a-kind portrait of a true American hero.

Ware hero'iek of gekte?
