The Flight of the Mew Gull: Record-breaking Flying in the 1930s
Henshaw, Alex
First Edition

Alex Henshaw's "Sigh for a Merlin" has been acclaimed as one of the best books on the Spitfire ever written. This is now the story of his peacetime experience. He had the luck to grow up in the '20s and '30s during the golden age of flying and thanks to his father's generous encouragement, it was not long before he had his own Gipsy Moth. From that moment there was no looking back.
The Blue Riband of flying in the British Isles between the two World Wars was the King's Cup. Henshaw set his heart on it, developing a technique of racing which extracted the very maximum from his aircraft: first the Comper Swift and then the DH Leopard Moth. Parallel with his search for speed was an obsession with making accurate landfalls, and he developed this blind-flying talent deliberately in a flying partnership with his father on many carefully planned long-distance survey flights. His exciting apprenticeship in these two skills was crowned by the acquisition of the Percival Mew Gull G-AEXF in 1937.
After many initial successes with the machine, Henshaw became associated with Jack Cross of Essex Aero Ltd at Gravesend, who became primarily responsible for the racing and long distance preparations. The first fruit of this partnership was victory in the King's Cup of 1938 at a speed that remains the fastest of any winning aircraft. This was closely followed by an amazing solo flight to Cape Town and back in February 1939, breaking all records and which, as a solo flight, still stand today. This feat of navigation and airmanship must surely be one of man's greatest flights - 12,754 miles over desert, sea and jungle in a single-engined light aircraft. Alex Henshaw teils his story in a vivid style that puts you at the heart of all his battles and adventures.

The Lonely Sky: The Personal Story of a Record-Breaking Experimental Test Pilot
Bridgeman, William - Hazard, Jaqueline
First Edition

This is the powerful and often thrilling story of a man who daily enters that lonely region beyond the speed of sound. A narrative of needle-nosed ships flying at blistering speeds, i t is also the moving testament of a man risking his life to push back the frontiers of scientific knowledge. Like St.-Exupery, Bridgeman is capable of describing the vastness and beauty of the skies. But as America's foremost experimental test pilot, he is constantly aware of the multitude of technical Information which he is called upon to use at any given instant.
After the war, Bill Bridgeman left the Navy a restless man. Seeking action, he joined Douglas Aircraft as an engineering test pilot. Soon he was asked to take over the final stages of the Skyrocket testing program. The Skyrocket, a javelin-shaped experimental ship, was a challenge to Bridgeman. The story of his day-by-day life with the plane is the substance of THE LONELY SKY.

The Next Five Minutes: Embracing the Impossible
Rutan, Dick - with Kelly Hall
Rare book.
First Edition. Signed by Dick Rutan.
This is No. 1507 of 5000 signed copies of the Limited Hardcover Edition.

On a cold December morning in 1986, Dick Rutan and co-pilot Jeana Yeager, against all odds, made aviation history when they successfully completed the first ever non-stop and non-refueled flight around the world in a homebuilt airplane! They had traversed 26,358 Statute miles, returning with only 18.3 of the 1200 gallons of gas they had taken off with nine days prior. Following their arduous takeoff, Dick's younger brother, Burt, watched the plane of his design disappear over the vast Pacific, believing it improbable he would ever see his brother alive again.
Dick had always been a risk-taker, possessing both a talent and passion for flying. Even at a young age he knew he wanted to achieve something of significance as a pilot. Although his motivation was strong, Dick struggled academically with what he learned decades later was undiagnosed dyslexia. With determination, he painfully devised ways to transcend those academic limitations and attain his goals. Little did he realize that the setbacks he experienced along the way would provide him with the exact skill-set he needed. This young man who had been deemed unfit for College would repeatedly succeed despite the odds. He rose through the ranks of the military and became a highly decorated fighter pilot who flew 105 combat missions over North Vietnam. Following his Air Force career, he set numerous aviation records, many of which remain unbroken. An inductee of the National Aviation Hall of Fame, he was the recipient of aviation's most coveted awards and was presented the Citizens Medal by President Ronald Reagan.
Throughout his life, Dick sought adventure and welcomed challenge, frequently finding himself at "danger's door" wondering what THE NEXT FIVE MINUTES of his life would be like. In his words, "lt's great to be an American ... to live in a free country where, if you can dream it, you can do it. The only way to fail is if you quit."

The first full account of the daring and pioneering aeronautical adventure, written by the man and woman who made it happen. They tell their own stories and how their six-year dream of Voyager was fulfilled - the designing, the building, and the triumphal nine-day flight of the first plane in history to circumnavigate the globe nonstop, without refueling (1986).

The Schneider Trophy Contest: 1913 - 1931
James, Derek N.
"Published to mark the 70th Anniversary of the last Schneider Trophy Contest, 13 September 1931"

The Schneider Trophy race was the brainchild of Frenchman, Jacques Schneider, who wanted to promote the use and development of seaplanes, a field of aviation then rather neglected. The first race, held in Monaco in 1913, was won triumphantly by a French aircraft. In 1914 the winner was a Sopwith Tabloid for Britain. The race was an international event attracting teams from France, Italy, Switzerland, the United States and Britain.
Not held again until after the First World War, technology had changed so much that the seaplanes of that year barely resembled those of the previous contest. They were sleeker, had more powerful engines and could fly at undreamed of speeds.
The history of the race from 1913 to Britain's final victory in 1931 was marked not only by the evolution of seaplane design, but by the vagaries of the organisation of the event. The rules were in theory simple. Victory in a race brought honour and the chance of hosting the next event; three consecutive victories, however, secured the winning team the trophy for posterity. The 1919 contest tumed into a farce when sea fog confused not only the course but also the judges and competitors, and was finally declared void by the Federation Aeronautique Internationale.
In 1931 the British team won the trophy outright with a Supermarine S6B floatplane. The Schnider Trophy Contest promoted the development of reliable high-powered engines and advanced airframe design and provided experience of high speed flight. It had promoted the use of floatplanes and they were now the fastest aircraft on earth. That 1931 winner was designed by Reginald Mitchell and was a direct ancestor of the most famous of fighter aircraft, the Spitfire.
Within the pages of the Schneider Trophy Contest Derek N. James traces the development of single engine seaplane racers from pioneer days to the peak of development in the early 1930s. Over 200 Images and informative text tell the story of this most important of races.

Undaunted: Long-Distance Flyers in the Golden Age of Aviation
Dunmore, Spencer
To make a record-breaking flight in the golden age of aviation was to gain fame and, with luck, fortune too. The risks were high - by no means all of the pioneers lived to old age - and failure was more likely than success, but for the mavericks, eccentrics, romantics, and visionaries in this book, the adventure alone was often worth it...

Vagabunden der Lüfte: Mit Doppeldecker und Schlafsack durch die USA
Bach, Richard
Deutsche Erstausgabe von "Nothing by Chance - A Gypsy Pilot´s Adventure in Modern Amerika" (1969).

Morgenstern, Karl - Simberger, Gert
