First Across !
The U.S. Navy's Transatlantic Flight of 1919
Smith, Richard K.
There are many first in transatlantic aviation. You may know Lindberghs famous flight from 1927, which was the first nonstop solo crossing. This book however describes in great detail the very first "First". In 1919 America with all it's military power demonstrated it could fly the Atlantic. No less then 56 U.S. destoyers were stationed along a line across the ocean to serve as station ships. Three planes left Newfoundland for Portual. Only one came through (after 20 days hopping from ship to ship). Not an elegant way to do the crossing, but an exiting story to read...
