A Cargo Pilot's Life
Tales from Corrosion Corner
Lane, Brett (Pilot)
... I read a book which was about a certain pilot's career flying freight. It was so boring, I couldn't finish it. Compared to what I went through, and the people I flew with, it was nothing.
I was compelled to write about an era in aviation that has pretty much come and gone. The age of the prop freighters- The DC-3's, C-46's, the DC-6's and DC-7's. The Lockheed Constellations. Then the jet age of the first generation cargo jets- the Boeing 707's, and the Douglas DC-8's. These aircraft for the most part are gone forever as well. I started my career in these venerable freighters in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and eventually ended up in Miami working in a relatively lawless place known äs corrosion corner. Some of the names of individuals and businesses have been changed for obvious reasons. A few airlines that I wrote about would naturally deny what happened, along with certain individuals.
It was a time reminiscent of the pirates of old. Flying under difficult and in some cases, unbelievable circumstances. There was drug smuggling and two civil wars in Central America. There was freight to be moved in and out of Latin and South America. When the Job was done, right across the street from the north Side of Miami International Airport was Miami Springs and numerous wa-tering holes. Pilots and mechanics worked hard, and played hard. This was the stuff of legend, and this is my story.
