Starfighter
A Loving Retrospective of the CF-104 Era in Canadian Fighter Aviation, 1961-1986
Bashow, David L.
First Edition.
For nearly a quarter of a Century, from 1962 to 1986, the CF-104 Starfighter roamed the skies of Western Europe as part of Canada's contribution to NATO. The momentous events of that era - from the Camelot years of the Kennedy administration, through Vietnam and Trudeaumania, to the birth of Glasnost - altered and shaped Canadian Foreign policy, and this was reflected in the changing nature of the Starfighter programme.
From nuclear strike/reconnaissance to conventional attack, the aircraft, tactics and roles were continually updated. David Bashow details the history of these changes and how they affected operations. Much more than a technical record this is also a human story, made up of recollections from many contributors including the author himself, of the aircraft, people and events captured with the immediacy that only a participant could provide. Always controversial, the Starfighter gained notariety during its career and the author deals with these aspects objectively, helping to dispel the myth of the "widow-maker".
The CF-104 Starfighter bridged the span of military aviation technology from the early post-war jets to the CF-18. It has earned a place in aviation history as distinctively Canadian as that enjoyed by the Spitfire and Sabre.
