abc Airbus A340
Birtles, Philip
From the series Ian Allan abc
The European consortium Airbus Industrie has, since its creation, established a significant presence in the civil airliner market, challenging the dominance of the US manufacturers McDonnell Douglas and Boeing. Airlines are increasingly
looking to dual source their new aircraft so äs to ensure that the market does not become dominated by a powerful single manufacturer which means that Airbus Industrie is seeing its products acquired by an increasing number of airlines.
The latest addition to the Airbus Industrie range is the A340, an aircraft which seeks to challenge Boeing's supremacy in the big four-engine airliner market. The first of the type flew in 1991 and entered service less than two years later. With a maximum of some 300 seats, the A340-200 can lay claim to having the longest range of any currently available airliner, whilst the A340-300 can accommodate up to 350 passengers. Almost 200 of the type have been ordered, of which nearly half are in service with a variety of airlines worldwide.
In this latest addition to the populär and highly successful 'abc' series Philip Birtles provides the reader with a pocket guide to the development, construction, entry into service and operators of the A340. Fully illustrated throughout, including a colour section, the book also includes detailed appendices listing individual aircraft deliveries.
For all those interested in the contemporary civil aviation scene abc Airbus A340 is an essential and detailed guide to one of the most significant aircraft to have entered Service duringthe 1990s.
