Convair B-58 Hustler
Holder, Bill
The B-58 Hustler was one of the most interesting bombers to ever reach operational Status. It had an appearance - even though designed in the 1940s - that would not look that much out of date in the 21 st Century. The first USAF delta-wing bomber, the Mach 2 Hustler also had the performance of a fighter. But its tenure was a short one, due to technical problems and excessive costs.
A number of variants of the Hustler were investigated with none of them ever reaching beyond the conceptual stage. The bomber was also considered for a number of other missions, including ECM, missile launcher, and even a fighter bomber.
A majority of the Husters met their demise in the late 1960s, but a few of them remain at museums across the country. And aviation enthusiasts that were not even born yet can do nothing but marvel at the delta-wing beauty of this old, new-appearing machine.
"Hustler" was certainly an appropriate name for this speedy vehicle.
