A WAAF in Bomber Command
Beck, Pip
A sensitively-written true story by a RAF Bomber Command wartime R/T operator who talked down the crews on their return from operations, met them off duty and so offen mourned their loss within days. The book sparkies with humour and anecdote yet has a very special poignancy. The author reiterates her 'deep admiration for the men of Bomber Command who carried the fight to the enemy when no one else could. They were, and are, truly remarkable men!

THE WAAF
The Women's Auxiliary Air Force was formed on 28th June 1939 and by July 1943, from a strength of less than 2,000 when war began, reached its peak strength of over 180,000 officers and airwomen. By 1945 the WAAF were working with men in 59 airmen's trades in addition to 17 ancilliary trades established solely for the WAAF. The first women officers went overseas in 1940 and between then and the end of the war served in North Africa, Tunis, Italy, Greece and Holland. The first draft of airwomen sailed for the Mediterranean in May 1944 and they also served in the Far East, France and Germany.
The work done by the WAAF during the war was recognised by the granting of a number of honours and awards and thousands were mentioned in dispatches. 186 were killed on active Service. On Ist February 1949 the WAAF became the Women's Royal Air Force.

Air Aces
Shores, Christopher
An Ace is generally accepted as a fighter pilot who has shot down five or more enemy aircraft. Since the beginning of air fighting each war and campaign has produced its air aces. This book not only describes the fighting careers of the famous fighter pilots, but places their achievements in the context of the conditions under which they fought. For example, the 352 victories of the Luftwaffe ace Erich Hartmann could only have been gained over the Russian Front in World War II.
Air combat began over the Western Front in World War l, where Immelmann and Boelke of Germany, Albert Ball of Britain and Guynemer of France all won early acclaim. Their lone-wolf tactics gave way later in World War l to swirling dogfights between large formations of fighters and in such combat new aces emerged. Manfred von Richthofen, the Red Baron, was the leading German ace with 80 Allied aircraft destroyed, followed closely by Ernst Udet and Werner Voss. On the Allied side were Mannock, McCudden, and Bishop of the British Empire, with Fonck and Nungesser of France.
In the early years of World War II the Luftwaffe had the advantage, many of the German aces, including Galland and Molders, being experienced veterans of the Spanish Civil War. Yet their opponents in the RAF were quick to learn, as the careers of Bader, Tuck, Johnson, Malan and the night fighter ace, John Cunningham, were to demonstrate.
The United States' entry into the war produced a new crop of aces, with men like Gabreski and Johnson in Europe and Bong and McGuire in the Pacific. The war in Russia saw the greatest air battles and the highest personal scores of all time. The Soviet ace, Ivan Kozhedub, was the top Allied ace with 62 kills, but this achievement was dwarfed by that of the two Luftwaffe top scorers, Hartmann with 352 kills and Barkhorn with 301.
The Jet age has also produced its aces, notably the successful USAF pilots of the Korean War, where Sabre pilots knocked down 829 Communist aircraft for the loss of only 78 of their own fighters. Vietnam added to the roll of American aces and the Arab-Israeli and Indo-Pakistan Wars saw many combats between Jet fighters. The story is brought up to date with an account of the air war over the Falkland Islands and the successes of the Royal Navy Sea Harrier pilots.
This exhaustively researched book contains a wealth of information on the air aces of modern warfare. Tables give statistics on all wars since 1914, including lesser known ones like the Russian Civil War and the IndoPakistan conflicts. Individual biographies are included on the greatest aces — Lufberry, Gabreski, Galland and Bong to name but a few. More than 250 color and black and white photographs many of them rarely seen, show the aces and aircraft they flew.

Airlift !: The Story of the Military Airlift Command
Thum, Marcella - Thum Gladys
"You call, we haul." Ever since the Military Airlift Command s beginning in 1941 as the Air Corps Ferrying Command, MAC has been doing just that—airlifting everything from troops to missiles to a whale.
The Military Airlift Command operates in wartime under battle conditions. Yet seeking out the eye of a hurricane, airdropping food and supplies for disaster victims, air-evacuating wounded, taking the President where he wants to go on Air Force One are only a few of its other responsibilities. MAC has been called "the biggest, busiest, most far-ranging aerial cargo carrier in the world."
MAC'S dramatic, little-known story is told here in text and photographs. Also featured are MAC'S legendary transports, from the ever-reliable C-47 Gooney Bird to the C-5 Galaxy, the largest aircraft in the world.

Als Deutschlands Dämme brachen: Die Wahrheit über die Bombardierung der Möhne-Eder-Sorpe-Staudämme 1943
Euler, Helmut

American Aces 1914-18
Franks, Norman
Aircraft of the Aces: Men & Legends Series 55

American fliers in World War l fall into three categories. Those
volunteers who enlisted in the French Aviation Service collectively became known as the Lafayette Flying Corps; they also manned the legendary, all-American Lafayette
Escadrille. The second group of volunteers flew with the British, either in the Royal Flying Corps or the Royal Naval Air
Service. The third group were those who after America came into the war on 6 April 1917. With no machines, the new arrivals had to acquire Sopwith Camels from the British and Nieuports and Spads from the French. This is the story of American ace-of-aces 'Eddie' Rickenbacker and his fellow pilots, men such as Raoul Lufbery, Frank Luke, Elliot White Springs and George Vaughan Jr, whose skill and courage is a reminder of more heroic days.

Arab - Israeli Air Wars 1947-67
TOP
Aircraft of the Aces: Men & Legends Series 48

In November 1947 the United Nations called for the end of the British mandate and the partition of Palestine into two independent states, Jewish and Arab. No one was happy. The
Israeli Air Force, cobbled together from a fleet of hastily converted light planes, suffered initial setbacks when hostilities
broke out. But the IAF soon built up its own fighter force from assortment of aircraft including Avia S-199s, B-17s, Spitfires and Beaufighters. Against all odds, Israel won its War of Independence against its Arab neighbours, but further conflict was inevitable. By the time of the Six Day War in 1967 the supersonic age had arrived bringing Mirages and Super Mysteres into battle with the latest MiGs. This is the story of the aircraft and the aces on both sides of the conflict during those early years.

Arab - Israeli Air Wars 1967-82
TOP
Aircraft of the Aces: Men & Legends Series 49

Israel's successful strategy of pre-emptive air strikes on Arab
airbases in the Six Day War played a critical part in their unprecedented victory. It brought them air supremacy and vast territorial buffer zones: the Sinai Peninsula, the Gaza Strip, the Golan Heights and the West Bank of Jordan, but it did not bring peace. Egypt, with the help of the Soviel Union, masterminded a war of attrition against the Israeli Air
Force using the latest missile technology. The USA inevitably took .Israel's side and the arrival of F-4s and F-15s helped redress the balance. Israel then held off the Arab attack of October 1973 and won another surprise victory in the so-called Yom Kippur War. In spite of peace treaties, hostilities did not cease and in 1982 the conflict moved to the Lebanon. This book traces the war in the air between Israel and its Arab neighbours during these troubled years.

Arado Ar 234 A: Variants - Weapons - Equipment
Smith, J. Richard - Creek, Eddie J.
First Edition.
From the series: Military Aircraft in Detail

The Arado 234 A was designed as the world's first pure jet reconnaissance / bomber and it was in this capability that the Germans led the world during the Second World War. Prior to ist intended role, like any new design it had a sustained development period where the initial design concepts regarding airframe, engine development, Instrumentation, equipment etc, were all tested in detail.
(n the case of the Arado in ist original A series guise, the most striking feature of the airframe was the lack of a conventional undercarriage, flight being achieved by a jettisonable dolly and landing on retractable skids. The Arado used the world's first successful axial flow-turbojet, a configuration that became the standard for jet engine design. In this form the prototypes went through a variety of engine types and combinations from both Junkers and BMW - in both twin-engine and four-engine layouts.
In this volume of Military Aircraft in Detail the A series is covered in unprecedented detail, included are:
Company History
Engines
Design and Development
Airframe and equipment
Detailed drawings
Colour profiles
Flying the Ar 234 A
The Military Aircraft in Detail series forms a comprehensive library of facts covering detailed aspects of both classic military and civilian aircraft.

Augsburg Eagle: The Story of the Messerschmitt 109
Green, William
First Edition.
This is the first accurate and comprehensive coverage of the background, development, technical evolution and operational career of what is probably the most famous single-seat fighter ever developed throughout the history of military aviation; a fighter that was built in larger numbers than any aircraft in its category before or since, and also enjoyed longer production life than any other fighter.
This book carries the story of the Messerschmitt 109 from the Augsburg-Haunstetten drawing boards of 1933 to its final Service use in Spain where it was finally phased out in 1967. In great detail, it tells the story of this remarkable Messerschmitt fighter which first fired its guns in anger in Spanish skies during the Civil War and was used in combat for the last time in the late 1940s by the newly-created State of Israel fighting for its existence against its Arab neighbours.

Crowood Aviation Series

First Edition

The Avro Lancaster was possibly the finest bomber of World War Two. Capable of lifting huge loads, yet a delight to fly, it spearheaded Bomber Command's night offensive over Germany. Post-war it went on to serve äs a maritime patrol aircraft, and served into the 1950s.
Ken Delve tells the full story of its design, development and operational use from its beginnings in the form of the Avro Manchester through to its retirement and beyond.

Avro Vulcan
Darling, Kev
Crowood Aviation Series

First Edition

The Avro Vulcan is probably the most famous and best best loved of the three V-Bombers that constituted the Royal Air Force's nuclear strike force during the 1960s. Immediately recognizable thanks to its huge delta wing, it was at the forefront of Britain's Strategie nuclear defences for over a decade.
As the nuclear deterrent was passed to the Royal Navy at the end of the 1960s, the Vulcan was redeployed onto tactical interdiction duties. during the 1982 Falklands War, the Vulcan saw the only combat service of its career, attacking Argentine positions on the Falklands with bombs and Shrike anti-radar missiles.
This detailed study surveys the history of the aircraft from its inception in 1947 to its final role as an inflight-refuelling tanker in the mid-1980s, and beyond.

Balkenkreuz und Roter Stern: Der Luftkrieg über Russland 1941 - 1944
Kurowski, Franz

Baptism Of Fire: The First Combat Experiences of the Royal Hungarian Air Force and Slovak Air Force, March 1939
Stenge, Csaba B.
This conflict is just a short episode from the turbulent history of Central Europe in the 20th Century, which is little known even in the countries involved, and almost totally obscure outside them. From the international point of view tbe most important event in the middle of March, 1939 was that the Third Reich occupied the Czech territories, which was a failure of the Western powers, since they hoped that by the Munich Agreement (29-30 September, 1938), they could avoid any future conflicts with Adolf Hitler. That is why their contemporary media and their recent history books are filled with these events, and do not mention a small parallel conflict.
From the Hungarian point of view, occupying its former territory of Sub-Carpathia was very important. Hungary was surrounded on three sides by the hostile Little Entente countries (Czechoslovakia, Rumania and Yugoslavia) and on the fourth side, since the Anschluss in March, 1938, by the Third Reich. To break this encirclement, it was necessary to restore the common border with Hungary's historical ally, Poland and this was achieved by the occupation of this territory. For the Hungarian Armed Forces, the short border conflict with Slovakia was only the closing phase of the occupation of Sub-Carpathia.
From the Slovakian point of view, however, this is a far more important conflict. Slovakia became independent for the first time in its history in March, 1939. Parallel to Slovak independence, the Czech territories from the former Czechoslovakia were seized by the Third Reich and Sub-Carpathia was occupied by Hungary. The Invasion of a border area of Slovakia by the Hungarians was considered by the Slovaks äs a direct threat to the independence of the country,
During the Hungarian occupation of Sub-Carpathia, their ground troops were supported by Hungarian reconnaissance and bomber forces. Ouring the border conflict with Slovakia, a short but fierce clash started between the contending air forces. Slovak planes strafed and bombed Hungarian ground troops on 23 March 1939, but the heaviest clashes happened on the very next day, when extensive air-to-air combat occurred. Clashes saw Hungarian Fiat CR.32s come up against Slovak Avia fighters and Letov reconnaissance and light attack planes. Also on that day, Hungarian Ju 86 bombers raided the main Slovak air base.
The majority of Hungarian materials relating to the combat have been lost or destroyed, so author Csaba B. Stenge Ph.O. has put in a Herculean effort to construct this account. The text contains details of the historical background to the conflict, a füll account of the combat, as well as notes on Hungarian aviators decorated for their performance, short biographies of Hungarian aviators credited with aerial victories, and a list of Hungarian anti-aircraft claims and aerial victories. Besides this, the book contains over 100 rare and mostly previously-unpublished Images, äs well as a selection of superb colour profiles showing camouflage and markings for the aircraft of both air forces.

Bell P-39 Airacobra
Dorr, Robert F. - Scutts, Jerry C.
Crowood Aviation Series

First Edition

The Bell Airacobra, with its distinctive shape and features, is an aeroplane that has taken more than its share of criticism. Although unsuited to fighting at altitude, it was an excellent gun platform for low-level work and a fine ground-attack aeroplane.
Its handling has come in for adverse comment, but it was fast and very heavily armed for its time. It was also able to absorb considerable punishment.
Robert F. Dorr tells the story of Bell's Cobras, from their design and introduction, through their use in the Far East and Russia, to their eventual retirement, in this welcome addition to the Crowood Aviation Series.

Black 6: The Extraordinary Restauration of a Messerschmitt Bf 109
Snadden, Russ
First Edition

On 17 March 1991, at RAF Benson in Oxfordshire, Black 6 flew for the first time since the Second World War. That day this particular Messerschmitt Bf 109 became unique - not only as the sole example of its type that is airworthy, but also as the only genuine German combat aircraft from the war flying anywhere in the worid. The historic flight marbed the culmination of a 19-year restoration programme by volunteer enthusiasts, led by a British pilot, Russ Snadden.
Black 6, as the fighter was known to its German pilots, was damaged in combat so saw only a few weeks of service during the war. However the Bf 109 aircraft served with the Luftwaffe for eight years and fought with distinction in every theatre of war in Europe and North Africa. Although it was built in greater quantities by far than any other type, and fired the imagination of the public on both sides of the conflict, only a handful of examples survives today - and only this one flies.
Russ Snadden had for many years been fascinated by Second World War aviation. A pilot with the Royal Air Force for 16 years before beginning a new career with Britannia Airways flying the Boeing 737, he searched long and hard for a suitable candidate for restoration. Black 6 is testimony to his perseverance. This is the extraordinary story of that voluntary project, the struggle to win assistance from industry, the search for missing equipment, and the piecing together of wartime personnel and events that has built up a remarfeably full history of the war plane in action.

Blackburn Buccaneer
Darling, Kev
Crowood Aviation Series

First Edition

Conceived in the 1950s äs a replacement for the Supermarine Scimitar, the Blackburn Buccaneer went into Service with the Royal Navy as its main carrier-borne nuclear strike aircraft. But with a diminishing role to play in world affairs, and a reduction in the number of aircraft carriers, the Navy disposed of its Buccaneers to the RAF, where they went on to become one of the Force's most successful and best-loved aircraft.
This complete history of the Buccaneer takes the reader from first proposals and the original production S.1 to the final fling of the type as a laser targeting aircraft during the first Gulf War.

Blue Skies: The Autobiography of a Canadian Spitfire Pilot in World War II
Olmsted, Bill
First Edition

Bill Olmsted joined the air force in 1940 after completing his second year at Hamilton's McMaster University. Two years later he was flying Spitfires over occupied territory. Before war's end he would fly more than 500 sorties, covering more countries and invasions than any other Canadian pilot. He became the only member of 242 Squadron to receive the Distinguished Service Order, and was also awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Bar.
In Blue Skies Olmsted recounts hair-raising dogfights with German Me 109s and FockeWulf 190s and describes the amazing escapades of his fellow pilots, among them Group Captain "Dutch" Hugo; Wing Commanders Johnny Johnson, Colin Gray and "Razz" Berry; and Squadron Leaders Dal Rüssel, "Duke" Arthur and "Hap" Kennedy.
Olmsted also describes the role of air power in the battle for Tunisia and Europe and the invasions of Sicily and Italy. Blue Skies is the gripping story of one of Canada's most decorated fighter pilots - - a story that ranks among the world's best
war memoirs.

Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress
Bowman, Martin W.
Crowood Aviation Series

First Edition

The Boeing B-17 is one of the most readily identifiable aircraft of World War Two. Known as the Flying Fortress due to its formidable defensive armament, it spearheaded the United States Army Air Force daylight bombing offensive against the Axis powers in Europe and the Pacific. Originally conceived as a long-range bomber capable of protecting the United States from naval attack, it first flew - as the Model 299 - on 28 July 1935 and was still in front-line service at the end of World War Two, ten years later.

Boeing B-29 Superfortress
Pace, Steve
Crowood Aviation Series

First Edition

The Boeing B-29 Superfortress was the most advanced and successful of all World War Two bombers. Conceived in the late 1930s as a high-speed, high-altitude, long-range 'Super Bomber', the first prototype B-29 did not fly until September 1942. But it entered the war in time to make a significant impact, including the dropping of the two atomic bombs that led to the surrender of Japan and the end of the war.
Steve Pace has written the complete history of this extraordinarily advanced aircraft, including full details of its design, manufacture and service with the American forces during World War Two, the Korean War and after, and with the British Royal Air Force during the 1950s. He also includes information on the Soviet-built B-29 copy - the Tu-4 'Bull'. Enlivened with first-hand accounts of wartime servicemen and many high-quality photographs, this is an indispensable book for anyone interested in the 'Superfort'.

Boeing B-52 Stratofortress
Davies, Peter E. - Thronborough, Tony - (with Tony Cassanova)
Crowood Aviation Series

First Edition

The Boeing B-52 Stratofortress looks set to continue in service well into the next Century: in some projections its retirement date could be as late as 2030. Statistically, this equates to the RAF still flying the Sopwith Camel as a front-line type in 1993 - except that the B-52 will still be a very potent weapon. Originally designed to replace the Boeing B-50, a development of the B-29 that had dropped the atomic bombs in World War Two, the B-52 was originally sketched with turboprop engines; however, the introduction of the crucial Pratt and Whitney J57 turbojet gave the new aircraft the power and fuel economy it needed. Powered by eight of these engines, the YB-52 first flew on 15 April 1952 and the bomber entered service with Strategie Air Command in June 1955.
The B-52 became the backbone of Strategie Air Command's nuclear strike force, remaining on constant alert to counter possible Soviel threats, but it was over Vietnam - using conventional weapons - that the B-52 saw its severest test in the world's most heavily defended skies.
The bomber has been progressively updated with improved self-protection and weapons. The final model, the B-52H, has more efficient turbofan engines and it too has seen active service, launching cruise missiles against Iraq.
Peter Davies and Tony Thornborough (with Tony Cassanova) tell the story of the design, development and operational use of the B-52 during ist outstanding career in their second book in the Crowood Aviation Series. With many rare and unpublished photographs, and first-hand accounts from over forty aircrew and maintainers, the book describes what it is like to fly and fight in the B-52. In-depth details of the aircraft, ist equipment and many of the little-known aspects of ist operational use complete this remarkable story.

Bomber 1914-1939
Cooper, Bryan - Batchelor, John

Bomber 1939-1945
Cooper, Bryan - Batchelor, John
