The Arado 234 A was designed as the world's first pure jet reconnaissance / bomber and it was in this capability that the Germans led the world during the Second World War. Prior to ist intended role, like any new design it had a sustained development period where the initial design concepts regarding airframe, engine development, Instrumentation, equipment etc, were all tested in detail.
(n the case of the Arado in ist original A series guise, the most striking feature of the airframe was the lack of a conventional undercarriage, flight being achieved by a jettisonable dolly and landing on retractable skids. The Arado used the world's first successful axial flow-turbojet, a configuration that became the standard for jet engine design. In this form the prototypes went through a variety of engine types and combinations from both Junkers and BMW - in both twin-engine and four-engine layouts.
