New Heavens: My Life as a Fighter Pilot and a Founder of the Israel Air Force
Senior, Boris
First Edition, First Printing.

BORIS SENIOR may not be well known outside Israel, but this transplanted South African played important, even vital, roles in the formation of the Israel Air Force (IAF) and in Israel's successful War of Independence in 1948. The first English-language edition of Senior's stirring memoir tells a personal story of Israel's difficult rebirth.
After World War II, during which he nearly died when shot down on a mission in 1945 for Britain's Royal Air Force, Senior dedicated himself to the establishment of a Jewish state by joining the Irgun to fight British control of Palestine. He undertook surreptitious operations to undermine the governing authority in Palestine until the onset of the 1948 War of Independence, when he returned to combat. One of the first nine Israeli pilots, he flew combat sorties against Israel's Arab neighbors in such disparate aircraft as the British-built Spitfire fighter and, oddly, a Beechcraft Bonanza, a civil aviation type. Senior used his own money to buy supplies and aircraft, personally undertaking many dangerous missions to fly new acquisitions to Israel. His tireless work to form an air defense system laid the groundwork for the modern Israel Air Force and earned him the deep respect and appreciation of his colleagues and Israel's early leaders.
Through all his experiences, Senior maintained a deep understanding of the predicament that bedevils the Middle East, particularly Israel and its neighbors. His fondest wish was to see the resolution of the age-old problems that result in so many Israelis and Arabs dying in attacks and counterattacks, more than fitty years after he helped launch the IAF.
BORIS SENIOR retired as a colonel and deputy chief of the Israel Air Force in 1952. Senior continued to serve when needed, however, returning to active duty during the conflicts in 1956 and in 1967. He lived in Israel until his death in 2004.

Night Duel Over Germany: Bomber Command’s Battle Over the Reich During WWII
Jacobs, Peter
First Edition

Bomber Command’s night offensive against Nazi Germany, which lasted for nearly six years, was one of Britain’s major contributions to the Allied effort during the Second World War. But the decision to conduct its main operations at night only came about following heavy losses by day, when its pre-war medium bombers had been found lacking in modern air warfare. The Luftwaffe, too, had its early problems. Initially without a dedicated night fighter, it was ill-equipped to defend the Reich, and so the stage was set for what would become one of the most critical strategic encounters of the war.

Things had to change on both sides. Soon there came new and more capable aircraft, in ever-increasing numbers, coupled with new tactics and technology, as each side strove to gain the upper hand. It became a fascinating encounter between the crews of Bomber Command and the Luftwaffe’s night fighter force, the Nachtjagd, with no shortage of courage and heavy losses on both sides. Amongst the epic encounters were Bomber Command’s Thousand Bomber raids, the attack on the German V-weapons research establishment at Peenemünde, the campaigns against the industrial Ruhr, Hamburg and Berlin, and the disastrous raid on Nuremberg.

This new publication consolidates accounts from both sides and from all ranks of service in an effort to provide a comprehensive account of some of the most ferocious nocturnal engagements of the Second World War.

Night Intruder: A Personal Account of the Radar War Between the RAF and Luftwaffe Night-Fighter Forces
Howard-Williams, Jeremy
First Edition

A day to day account of the life of an RAF night fighter pilot during the years 1941-45. After a tour of operations with 'Cat's Eyes' Cunningham's Beaufighter squadron, the author was made flight commander of Fighter Command's night experimental unit, with its wide variety of aircraft ranging from the Mosquito to the Tempest, from the Black Widow to the Messerschmitt 410.
This corps d'elite was responsible for evaluating various forms of air-borne radar; to do this they took their experiments on night intruder missions against German night fighter airfields, to home on the radar and the homers which the Luftwaffe was using against RAF bombers.
We learn what the Mosquito was like to fly on operations, how it was navigated and about the early jets. We are given brief glimpses of the ground organisation, mess parties, the author's feelings about the war, his allies and his special relationship with his navigators. Now and then a well known RAF ace flits through the pages.
Interspersed through the narrative is commentary on parallel German development, and there is a foreword by ex-Major Rudolph Schoenert, who shot down 54 Allied aircraft and commanded the Luftwaffe's NJG 10, the exact equivalent of the Fignter Interception Unit in which the author was serving at the same time.

North American F-86 Sabre: Combat Legend
Bowman, Martin W.
With its distinctive wail it is remembered from the 1950s for its air superiority in the Korean War where it tangled with Russia's MiG-15 in the first jet vs jet combats. It was the first experience of high-speed jet flight for the NATO air forces and it closed the gap with the previously superior Soviet jet fighters. The design borrowed heavily from WWII German high speed flight research but was truly a pilot's aeroplane.

North American P-51 Mustang: Combat Legend
Darling, Kev
The Mustang was the greatest godsend to the massive daylight bomber fleets that pounded Hitler's Reich during World War II. It was the first aircraft to have the range and ability to intercept and destroy German fighters that had previously decimated Allied attacks and caused the loss of many US aircrew.
Designed and built in the USA to a British specification, the early models were under-powered and it was not until the famous Merlin engine was installed that its full potential was realised. The type played a vital part in all wartime theatres and went on to serve with many air forces in post-war years.

Profiles of Flight Series

The Mustang was born from a British WW2 specification to North American during 1940. The prototype was completed within 117 days but the RAF was not happy with the aircraft's performance and suggested replacing the V-1E Allison engine with the more powerful RR Merlin. The result was a superbly fast and manoeuvrable aircraft that had the range to escort Allied bomber forces on raids deep into occupied Europe. A total of 15,469 of the type were built and were also used in combat during the Korean War.
This book contains the world famous colour profiles created by Dave Windle of the type in different operational modes, configurations and colour schemes. Martin Bowman has written detailed descriptions and supplied süperb photographs to create the perfect enthusiast's reference.

One Down, One Dead: The personal adventures of two Fourth Fighter Group combat pilots as they face the Luftwaffe over Germany
Speer, Frank
Two WWII fighter pilots, raised on different continents and trained in different countries, fight life or death combat with the Luftwaffe over Europe. They flew P-51 Mustangs in the 4th Fighter Group and contributed to the Group score of a record 1000-plus enemy planes destroyed, the highest total of any Allied Group. They became Aces within a day of each other; then one was killed in combat on D-Day, while the other, having been shot down, trecked across northern Germany in a futile effort to evade capture.
He is finally captured and äs a POW, is forced to participate in a "Death March." After several unsuccessful attempts, he and a fellow POW finally escape. Leading a handful of French forced-laborers they capture 25 German soldiers, turn them over to Patton's advancing Third Army and eventually return to the U.S. by hospital ship.

Pictorial History of the Luftwaffe 1933-1945
Price, Alfred (Flight Lieutnant)
WHATEVER one's political persuasion, there is much one can find that is intriguing about Hitler's Luftwaffe. Here was a force that in six short years rose almost from nothing to become the terror of Europe. It was the Luftwaffe that made possible the lightning victories by the German Army during the first three years of the war. Then, gradually but inexorably, the air forces of Germany's enemies became stronger than her own, and the Luftwaffe was forced on to the defensive on each front in turn. Finally, the vast majority of its aircraft grounded for want of fuel, many of its best crews dead or in prison camps, the greater part of it could do no more than sit on the ground and wait for the end to come. But as long as the war lasted the Luftwaffe could never be ignored in the Allied calculations, for to the very end it proved capable of springing uncomfortable surprises.
Here, for the first time, a step by Step history of Hitler's Air Force is presented in pictures. Scores of the photographs have never been published before, others only rarely so. To get them, and also to research for the text the author, himself a regular officer in the Royal Air Force, visited many of the German senior officers who survived. The result is a unique and objectively precise account of the birth, life and death of the Luftwaffe.

Pictorial History of the USAF
Mondey, David
Almost seventy years of United States Air Force history is covered in this single volume, from the moment in 1907 when the Signals Corps of the United States Army established an Aeronautical Division to take "charge of all matters pertaining to military ballooning, air machines, and all kindred subjects".
David Mondey tells in concise form a continuing and exciting story of growth, from its three-man Aeronautical Division to the historic moment, on July 21, 1969, when 'Buzz' Aldrin of the USAF became the second man to set foot on the Moon.
The 144-page picture section contains no fewer than 250 black and white illustrations to enhance the narrative, making the volume a 'must' for the bookshelf of the aviation enthusiast and general reader alike.

Pursuit Through Darkened Skies: An Ace Night-fighter Crew in World War II
Allen, Michael
An Airlife Classic

When Michael Allen 'crewed up' witli Harry White in August 1941, it was the start of a four-year partnership as navigator and pilot respectively; together they formed one of the RAF's top-scoring night-fighter crews of World War II. Known in the night-fighter world as 'Mike Allen', his Job was to operate the primitive airborne interception equipment (AI) and guide Harry 'through darkened skies' until his pilot could see the enemy aircraft ahead of them.
The Author:
Michael Allen and Harry White (later to become Air Commodore H.E. White CBE, DFC**, AFC), are amongst the elite band, numbering only 59, who have been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross three times. Michael joined the RAF in March 1941 and served until he was demobilised in 1946. Sadly, Mike passed away in June 2001.

RAAF Camouflage & Markings 1939-45 - Volume 1
Pentland, Geoffrey
Precise Information about the colors and markings of WW 2 RAAF aircraft is often extremely difficult to locate, particularly for those which had interesting or amusing personal emblems. In this book, the first of a two-part set, will be found a wonderful visual presentation of dozens of aircraft in a variety of conditions ranging from the slick new machine in factory finish to the mud-stained often bullet-ridden combat veteran. Former members of the RAAF will in fact remember many of them. The author's extensive selection of color illustrations - each one involving much preliminary research even before painting could begin - took six months to complete and are collector's items in themselves. In addition to its highly readable text, the book contains approximately 300 rare black and white and color photographs, probably the most comprehensive set of official RAAF Camouflage and markings documents yet to be published, and many surprises. This volume covers the years 1939 to 1943.

Radikaler Luftkampf: Die Geschichte deutscher Rammjäger
Rose, Arno

Reach for the Sky: The story of Douglas Bader - Hero of the Battle of Britain
Brickhill, Paul
This book was first published in 1954.

The story of Douglas Bader's life is the stuff of legend. After losing both his legs in a flying accident he returned to the RAF at the beginning of the Second World War to become Britain's most famous airman and hero. In the Battle of Britain he led his squadron of Spitfires to kill after kill, keeping them going with his unstoppable banter all the while. Shot down in occupied France, his German captors had to confiscate his tin legs in order to stop him trying to escape. And Bader faced it all, disability, leader-ship and capture, with a charm, charisma and determination that was to become Inspiration to all around him.

Reichsverteidigung: Die deutsche Tagjagd 1943-1945
Held, Werner

Republic F-105 Thunderchief
Davies, Peter
Air Vanguard 2

The Republic F-105 Thunderchief was the fastest and most successful strike fighter of the Cold War. Designed to deliver nuclear weapons at low altitude and then fight its way back to base, by the early 1960s it was the primary weapon in the USAF's tactical strike arsenal. Thunderchief pilots in Europe, the Far East and the USA stood on short-notice alert, ready to take on the formidable defenses of their Communist Bloc targets. The F-105 was, however, to become a legend in a very different conflict. As direct American involvement in Vietnam increased, F-105s were deployed - initially as a deterrent, but ever more as conventional attack fighters against insurgency in Laos and Vietnam. With the start of the bombing campaign against North Vietnam, the Thunderchief became a vital element in attacks against some of the most heavily defended territory in modern history.

Republic P-47 Thunderbolt: Combat Legend
Scutts, Jerry
The pugnacious lines of this stocky fighter show its strength and ruggedness. It was first deployed as a long-range escort fighter, protecting the massed fleets of B-17 and B-24 bombers attacking targets in Europe. It also fought well in the Pacific. As the war progressed P-47s were increasingly used for ground-attack and by the end of the war they had accounted for 6,000 tanks, 9,000 locomotives, 86,000 rail wagons and 68,000 trucks. Add 3,916 enemy aircraft destroyed and the result makes it one of the most effective fighters of World War II.

SAAB J21 / J21R
Forslund, Mikael
First Edition

Yellow Series No 6127

The first in a long line of fighter aircraft from SAAB, and showing early evidence of their taste for the unconventional, the J-21 was a very unusual design with pusher engine and tricycle undercarriage. Despite problems with both the undercarriage and engine cooling, the J-21 and its attack version the A-21 were built in some numbers and served the Swedish Air Force well in the late '40s / early '50s. A jet-powered derivative, the J-21 R, was also built and entered service, the very first Swedish jet fighter. The story of these innovative aircraft is told in this book, profusely illustrated with photos, scale drawings and colour profiles. A complete walk-around section in colour shows the surviving airframes in some detail.

Saga of the Superfortress: The Dramatic Story of the B-29 and the Twentieth Air Force
Birdsall, Steve
First UK edition

Best known as the aircraft that carried the atomic bomb to Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the B-29 Superfortress emerged from World War II as a dramatic symbol of the force of American Strategie air power. The most advanced bomber of its day, it was equipped with remote-controlled gun turrets, was the first to be pressurized for high-altitude operations, and could carry its eleven-man crew and thousands of pounds of bombs for more than five thousand miles at over four hundred miles per hour. It was a tremendous technological achievement; it was also the Army Air Force's biggest gamble.
Steve Birdsall, already familiar to military aviation buffs as the author of such books as Flying Buccaneers and Log of the Liberators, here tells the story of this awesome weapon, from its conception in the mind of General H. H. "Hap" Arnold, commander of the Army Air Force, to the epochal delivery of "Little Boy," the first nuclear attack. SAGA OF THE SUPERFORTRESS is a comprehensive history of the plane, the men who designed and flew it, and the grueling, perilous missions they carried out: ferry flights over the Himalayan "Hump"; the fearsome incendiary raids when hundreds of the huge airplanes stoked raging fire storms in the hearts of the Japanese cities; and the August, 1945, mission in which a sole B-29, the Enola Gay, leveled Hiroshima and blasted the world into the atomic age.
More than 200 photographs, many never before published, complement the story, a story that ranges far across the vast reaches of the Pacific, whose cast of characters includes such greats as MacArthur, LeMay, Chennault and Nimitz. The Superfortresses and the pilots and crews of the Twentieth Air Force opened a new chapter in the history of war, a tale of courage and tenacity, tragedy and triumph. This is a book that belongs on the shelf of anyone interested in the machines, men and events that shaped the postwar world.
Steve Birdsall found his career as a writer in the field of aviation history after a stint as a war correspondent in Viet Nam. He has six books to his credit, äs well as many articles for aviation periodicals. Mr. Birdsall lives in Sydney, Australia.

Shark Squadron Pilot
Horden, Bert
First Edition

'Shark Squadron Pilot' is a graphic Illustration of the realities of the air war in the Western Desert. Bert Horden joined No. 112 'Shark' Squadron early in 1942 and was soon initiated into the ground attack role of the 'Kittys'. With their garish shark's mouths painted on their aircraft No. 112 Squadron wreaked havoc on the German Afrika Corps as the war in the Western Desert rose to its climax. Inflicting terrible damage with machine gun fire on soft skinned targets, like convoys of trucks, and causing significant damage with their underslung bombs on the hard skinned Panzers, the aircraft of '112 Squadron soon became well known to Rommel's troops.
Using his diary and flying log book to preserve the accuracy and immediacy of the events Bert Horden has written a superb account of desert flying . In places extremely graphic and throughout well illustrated, 'Shark Squadron Pilot' will be an important contribution to the recorded history of the Second World War.

Shot Down in Flames: A World War II Fighter Pilot's Remarkable Take of Survival
Page, Geofffrey
On 12 August 1940, during the Battle of Britain, in an engagement with Dornier Do 17s, Geoffrey Page was shot down into the English Channel, suffering severe burns. He spent much of the next 2 years in hospitals, undergoing piastic surgery, but recovered sufficiently to pursue an extremely distinguished war and post-war career. This eloquently written and criticatly acclaimed autobiography tells of his wartime exploits in the air and on the ground.
He was a founder member of The Guinea Pig Club - formed by
badly burnt aircrew - and this is a fascinating account of the Club, of the courage and bravery of 'The Few', and of Geoffrey's later life and achievements, most particularly in the creation of The Battle of Britain memorial.

Sky Spies: Three Decades of Airborne Reconnaissance
Thronborough, Anthony M.
First Edition

Airborne reconnaissonce is now at the leading edge of airframe technology and combines the latest stabilised optical systems and highfy sensitive signals-receiving apparatus - a far cry from its humble plate-camera beginnings.
In the modern information-hungry battle-field environment, the electronic snoopers carry amazingly sophisticated systems designed for specific missions. Sensors include ultra-high-resolution cameras, electro-optic, infra-red and electromagnetic devices that can now produce 'near-real-time' reconnaissance. Data is converted and conveyed within minutes.
This detailed and informative new book examines one of the most fascinating areas of modern air power through an assessment of the surveillance aircraft that operate worldwide and the remarkable range of sensors they carry. Airframe development is charted from the period of greatest intelligence gathering during the Cold War right through to the latest 'live war' deployment in the 1991 Gulf War.
Also covered are actual reconnaissance missions, including the famous SR-71 Blackbird operations, as well as the combat aircraft developments that now accompany pilot rescue
operations and the little-covered world of helicopter reconnaissance. One of many revelations is the fact that aircraft frequently continue in service because nothing better has succeeded them: updated systems prolong their
useful lives almost indefinitely.
As well as a detailed record of the hardware in service with today's air forces, this book represents a fascinating overview of where reconnaissance has come from and how pilots, crew and behind-the-scenes analysts perform their top-secret roles.
