Russlands Weg zum Mond
Wallisfurth, Rainer Maria
Erstausgabe

Seven into Space: The Story of the United States Astronauts and Project Mercury
Bell, Joseph N.
First Edition

Seven brilliant and dedicated young men are eagerly waiting to be shot 120 miles into space, orbit the earth three times at a speed of 1,600 m.p.h., and then be dropped into the Atlantic Ocean. All seven sorely want to be the first to make this flight.
These unusual men are the Astronauts of Project Mercury, America's man-into-space programme. In Seven Into Space, Joseph Bell gives us the whole story of Project Mercury - its background and growth, the selection and training of the Astronauts, and the development of America's space rockets.
To top it off, he describes man's first ride into space in detail, as the men who will take it explained it to him.
Frorn the beginning, Project Mercury has been a fascinating programme. The difficult task of selecting the Astronauts was made more difficult by the fact that no rules existed for selecting spacemen.
Nor were there precedents to follow in establishing the training programme and thus it has had to be worked out as it progressed. Unusual too is the fact that the development of the programme's space rockets has been going on concurrently with the Astronauts' training, and that they have had a big part in designing their own space equipment.
All this makes interesting reading, and Bell, an ex-Navy pilot, tells the story in a clear and factual manner.
In conclusion, he tells what we can expect in the way of space travel in the coming years - a manned orbit of the moon, a 'soft' landing on the moon and return, building of space stations, and probes to the planets.
In more than one of these developments the Russians have already blazed the trail. Can America regain the lead in scientific achievement and world prestige?

Sieben Männer für den Weltraum: Die Geschichte der Merkur-Astronauten
Bell, Joseph N.
Deutsche Erstausgabe von "Seven into Space" (Lonodn, 1960)

Skylab: America's Space Station
Shayler, David J.
First Edition
Springer-Praxis Books in Astronomy and Space Sciences

Between May 1973 and February 1974 three teams of astronauts increased the American space endurance record from 14 days, set in 1965, to three months aboard the Skylab space station in missions lasting 28, 59 and 84 days. American astronauts did not surpass these records for over 20 years until the NASA Mir missions began in 1995.
Skylab evolved from plans to use Apollo lunar hardware for extended scientific missions in Earth orbit, becoming a platform for research in solar science, stellar astronomy, space physics, earth resources, life and material sciences. Skylab was where Americans first learned the skill of truly living and working in space, even offering students the chance to fly their own experiments on a manned spacecraft.
In Skylab - America's Space Station, David Shayler chronicles the evolution of the Station, its infrastructure on the ground including astronaut training, each of the three manned missions, summary of results, achievements and the lessons learned. The creation of the International Space Station is the real legacy of Skylab äs American astronauts once again embark on extended missions around the Earth.

SOS im All: Pannen, Probleme und Katastrophen der bemannten Raumfahrt
Gründer, Matthias
Zweite, erweiterte Auflage.

Space Exploration
TOP
George, Michael
Humankind has always dreamed of escaping the boundaries of Earth to explore the mysteries of outer space. In the last half-century the dream has become reality.
Today, space travel benefits us in many fascinating and unbelievable ways: "Satellites help us forecast the weather and monitor the resources of our planet. People on space stations study the universe, lest scientific theories and manufacture high-technology products that cannot be
made on Earth.
Space Exploration travels back in time to the beginning of our journey into space. It also ventures into the future of space travel, where starships travel to distant stars at the speed of light.

Space Research and Exploration
Bates, D.R. (Editor)
Although a number of books have appeared on the exploration of space, this is the first to be written for the general reader by a panel of scientists who are themselves prominent in the field of current research. It is of particular interest and importance because it comes at a time when man's conquest of space is moving from the realm of conjecture into that of experimental fact.
Compiled under the distinguished editorship of Professor Bates, it systematically surveys the whole subject, from the construction of rockets and the research already done on the upper atmosphere to the launching of artificial satellites and the final possibility of voyages to the nearer planets. Such questions as the possible use of an 'atomic drive', hazards from meteors and cosmic rays, and the immense difficulties of navigation in inter-planetary space, are carefully considered.
The authors have not set out to provide easy simplifications but to describe the problems that actually face research workers and the means that are being tried out to overcome them. There is however nothing in the main text that cannot be followed by an intelligent reader with no scientific training. Where a mathematical treatment of a problem has seemed useful, it has been provided separately in an appendix.

Space Shuttle Launch System 1972 - 2004
Lardas, Mark (author) - Palmer, Ian (Illustrator)
First Edition. First Printing.

The Space Shuttle is one of the oldest and most famous manned launch systems. The only launch vehicle that has been used for a longer period of time is the Soviet (now Russian) R-7 booster. By the start of the third millennium, the Space Shuttle had carried crews into space over 85 times. Although it is not a military structure, the Shuttle had been sold as an all-purpose launch system to be used jointly for military and civilian purposes. Featuring full-color photos throughout, this book covers the design, development and operational history of a unique vehicle.

Space Shuttle: The First 20 Years - The Astronauts' Experiences in Their Own Words
Reichhardt, Tony (Air & Space / Smithonian Magazine, Editor)
First Edition

In this unprecedented collection of personal stories, 77 space shuttle astronauts - the largest number ever in one volume - share their recollections of living and working on board the world's only reusable spaceships over the past 20 years.
Through written submissions and original Interviews with the editors of Air & Space/ Smithsonian magazine, the astronauts tell in candid detail what it's really like to launch into orbit, float weightless, conduct spacewalks, view the Earth from 200 miles up, build a space station, and rustle seven-ton satellites by hand. Their stories of adventure, surprise, fear, and awe take us behind the scenes to a wondrous place that few people can visit for themselves.
The photographs in the book, many of them published here for the first time, were collected from deep in the NASA archives to portray the shuttle experience from the astronaut's point of view.
ASTRONAUT MIKE McCULLEY, ON THE LAUNCH:
The vehicle explodes, literally explodes, off the pad. The Simulator shakes you a little bit, but the actual liftoff shakes your entire body and soul.
BERNARD HARRIS, ON BEGINNING A SPACEWALK:
As l was getting ready to step out, it feit for an instant like gravity was going to grab hold of me and pull me down toward Earth. l feit myself hanging on to the handrail and saying, "No, you're not going to fall..."
JOHN GLENN, ON THE CHALLENCER ACCIDENT!
If anybody had told me back in the days of Project Mercury that we would go all these years, dealing with all these complexities of space travel, and would have only one failure, l'd have thought that was wishful thinking.

Stages to Saturn: A Technological History of the Apollo/Saturn Launch Vehicles
Bilstein, Roger E.
This thorough and well-written book gives a detailed but highly readable account of the enormously complex process whereby the Marshall Space Flight Center under the direction of Wernher von Braun developed the launch vehicles used in the Apollo program to send humans to the Moon. Based on exhaustive research and equipped with extensive bibliographic references, this book comes as close to being a definitive history of the Saturn rocket program as is ever likely to appear. Moreover, it is not simply a technical history but covers the decision-making process that lay behind the technological development, making it not just a history of hardware development but also an analysis of technical management and organization.

Star-Crossed Orbits: Inside the U.S.-Russian Space Alliance
Oberg, James
First Edition

ON OCTOBER 4, 1357, taking the whole world by surprise, the Soviet Union launched its Sputnik satellite into the starry heavens and the great Space Race was on. In the decades that followed, the post-Sputnik boom pitted the U.S. and Soviet space programs against each other in a race for headlines, hasty glories, and real prizes. It was a marathon plagued by misinformation, suspicion, and rumor. And while the headlines have endured in our patriotic memory, the hidden consequences of hollow triumphs still shape our attitudes and beliefs today, in an era of so-called cooperation.
With great fanfare, this 30-year Space Race officially ended in 1993, and in its place the U.S.-Russian space alliance was born. But beneath all the official rhetoric of a bold new era of space exploration, the "marriage made in the heavens" has been fraught with the same pitfalls of misunderstanding, suspicion, and high-level chicanery that started with Sputnik- souvenirs of the misperceptions and delusions of the Cold War that threaten to drag down the alliance and the space programs of several other nations with it.
In Star-Crossed Orbits, space veteran and best-selling author James Oberg combines riveting personal memoir with top-notch investigative journalism to tell the complete untold story of the U.S.-Russian space alliance, describing the strengths and weaknesses of each side and revealing, for the first time, the full story of Russia's decaying space program, the dangerous secrets it kept from its American partners, and the ultimate cost of NASA's all-too-often self-imposed ignorance about its "space partner."
A space sleuth with unparallelecl access to official Russian archives, facilities, and key individuals, Oberg leads the reader through ihe attics of the Russian space program to uncover the greed, corruption, and covered-up setbacks that have nearly brought the program to virtual collapse. He describes the U.S.-Mir venture and NASA's reluctance to learn from its lessons. He explores the "jewel in the crown" of the alliance, the International Space Station, a project begun with the best intentions, but which is now in danger of running aground on reefs of self-delusion. Finally, in an impassioned plea, Oberg urges the alliance to "break free of the star-crossed orbits of misperception that bind us to the ground." Only then, insists the author will we be truly allied, with a reach that can grasp the stars.

About the Author
JAMES OBERG was a space engineer for 22 years in NASA's mission control in Houston. He has been the space consultant for ABC News, United Press International, and several foreign networks. Oberg is widely recognized as a world authority on the Russian space-program, and he has been invited on several occasions to testify before Congress on the problems facing the Russian space industry. He is the author of 10 books, including the classic, Red Star in Orbit, and about 1,000 magazine and newspaper articles on all aspects of space flight.

Starman: The Truth Behind the Legend of Yuri Gagarin
Doran, Jamie - Bizony, Piers
First U.S. Edition

On April 12, 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first person to venture into space, gaining worldwide fame in a quick 108-minute journey. Starman tells for the first time Gagarin's personal odyssey from peasant to international icon, his disintegration under the pressures of fame, and his final disillusionment with the USSR. Before President Kennedy had put an American on the moon, Gagarin himself was dead, killed at age thirty-four in a mysterious air crash. Publicly mourned, his death was privately met with relief by the Soviet hierarchy, and the KGB report into his death remains secret. Entwined with Gagarin's history is that of the breathtaking and highly secretive Russian space program. Starman looks behind the scenes of the first great space spectacular, and reveals how it came frighteningly close to destruction.

Taking Science to the Moon: Lunar Experiments and the Apollo Program
Beattie, Donald A.
First Edition. First Printing.

How did science get aboard the Apollo rockets, and what did scientists do with the space allotted to them? Taking Science to the Moon describes, from the perspective of NASA headquarters.the struggles that took place to include science payloads and lunar exploration äs part of the Apollo program. Author Donald A. Beattie - who served at NASA from 1963 to 1973 in several management positions and finally as program manager, Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments - here supplies a detailed, insider's view of the events leading up to the acceptance of science activities on all the Apollo missions.
Beattie tells this story within the context of what we knew about the moon in the 1960s, the ongoing programs that looked ahead to the first successful landing, and the objections that had to be overcome within NASA's entrenched engineering culture. Beattie concentrates on activities directly related to science, including behind-the-scenes controversies. He also discusses the important contributions of some of the lesser-known participants and contractors, who played a much larger role than previous books on the program have acknowledged.
Taking Science to the Moon provides the early history of on-site lunar experiments, raising important questions about a shift in NASA policy which led to some of the most dramatic planetary science developments of our time.

Test Gods: Virgin Galactic and the Making of a Modern Astronaut
Schmiedle, Nicholas
First Edition.

Working exclusive inside reporting, New Yorker writer Nicholas Schmidle tells the remarkable story of the test pilots, engineers, and visionaries behind Virgin Galactic's campaign to build a space tourism company. Schmidle follows a handful of characters - Mark Stucky, Virgin's lead test pilot; Richard Branson, the eccentric billionaire funding the venture; Mike Moses, the grounded, unflappable president; Mike Alsbury, the test pilot killed in a fatal crash; and others - through personal and professional dramas, in pursuit of their collective goal: to make space tourism a reality.
Along the way, Schmidle weaves his relationship with his father - a former fighter pilot and decorated war hero - into the tragedies and triumphs that Branson's team confronts out in the Mojave desert as they design, build, and test-fly their private rocket ship. Gripping and novelistic, Test Gods leads us, through human drama, into a previously unseen world - and beyond.

Note: Mark Stucky, Virgin's lead test pilot was fired by Zoom after publication of this book, eight days after Richard Branson’s flight into space...

The All-American Boys: The Fighter Pilot - committed, confident, courageos
Cunningham, Walter (NASA Astronaut)
"The most realistic look yet at stronaut life." (Chicago Sun-Times).

The All-American Boys is a no-holds-barred candid memoir by a Former Marine jet jockey and physicist who became NASA's second civilian astronaut.
Walter Cunningham presents the astronauts in all their strengths and their weaknesses in this dramatically revised and totally updated edition of a book that was considered an instant classic in its first edition over two decades ago. From its insider's view of the pervasive "astropolitics" that guided the functioning of the astronaut corps to its thoughtful discussion of the Columbia tragedy, The All-American Boys resonates with Cunningham's passion for humanity's destiny in space which endures today. This is not just a "tell-all" book. It is also a story of the triumph of American heroes. Cunningham brings us into the NASA training program and reveals what it takes physically and mentally to be an astronaut. He poignantly relates the story of the devastating Apollo 1 fire that took the lives of astronauts Grissom, White, and Chaffee and his own later successful flight on Apollo 7.
This new edition includes an update of the manned space program and his "tell it like it is" observation of NASA's successes and failures. It also includes commentary on the Shuttle disasters of Challenger and Columbia and his views on what NASA should be doing to get back on track and to regain public support.

The Continuing Story of the International Space Station
Bond, Peter
First Edition
Springer-Praxis Books in Astronomy and Space Sciences

The International Space Station Programme has made its mark in the annals of space exploration through a remarkable series of space 'firsts':
• the first time a partnership of nations has owned and operated a space Station
• the first time western agencies have been given access to previously-secret Russian facilities
• the first time training and control centres in many countries have been linked
• the first time traffic involving multiple spacecraft built by many countries has been coordinated
• the first time large-scale commercial ventures have been attempted
• the first time a robot has handed over to another robot in human space flight
And the list is growing.
As NASA Space Station Programme Manager Tommy Holloway said: "When the world looks back on the International Space Station, they will see one huge team accomplishing an incredible mission. And through integrity, trust and respecting people, no obstacle, whether technical or cultural, is preventing this world space flight team from achieving our goals."
This is the story of a truly monumental project, from the dream to the reality.

Kennedy, Gregory P
From the Series "World Explorers"

With an Introduction Essay by Michael Collins, Command Module Pilot, Apollo 11

"Our great-grandchildren will read and study about the birth of a new era, how a trail to the endless universe was blazed by the children of the Earth."
- Cosmonaut Gherman Titov

By today's standards it was a primitive craft - a crude-looking spherical object just large enough to hold a single human passenger. Thrown into outer space by a small booster rocket, it orbited the earth once and then fell back through the atmosphere like a spent cannonball. At 26,000 feet a man was violently ejected from the sphere; a parachute blossomed above him and he floated gently down to the ground. The date was April 12, 1961, and the man's name Yury Gagarin - would thenceforward be mentioned in conjunction with the names of such explorers as Columbus and Magellan, Marco Polo and Robert Peary, for Cosmonaut Gagarin was the first human to journey beyond the boundary of the earth's atmosphere, and a new age of discovery had begun. The men and women who followed Gagarin in those exhilarating and perilous first years of space exploration, astronauts such as Alan Shepard and John Glenn and cosmonauts such as Gherman Titov and Valentina Tereshkova, were the first to venture into the new, infinite frontier, and their experiences forever changed our vision of ourselves and the tiny planet that is our home.

The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Space Technology
Gatland, Kenneth
When the Soviet Union launched the world's first satellite in 1957 and the first man into space just three and a half years later, it was clear that mankind has embarked on a thrilling new adventure. A mere eight years after Gagarin, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed their Eagle Lunar Module on the Moon, the crowning achievement of the first Golden Age of space exploration.
But, as the past 30 years have shown, space research is more than exploration. Satellites have spun a web of communications around our world, linking nations by telephone, telegraph and television. Other kinds of satellite serve as "radio-stars" helping our ships and planes navigate safely in all weather Observation satellites keep us informed about weather, ocean conditions, earth resources, pollution and the health of agricultural crops and forests. Still other spacecraft keep watch on military activities around the world and help to police arms limitation agreements.
We have also seen the first space stations - Russia's Salyuts and Mir and America's Skylab - in which men and women have begun to experiment with new ways of making things in the microgravity environment of space. Scientists expect to exploit these techniques flying to and from orbit in reusable space Shuttles. Buran (Snowstorm) allied to the new Soviet heavy-lift booster Energiya now takes its place alongside the NASA Space Shuttle, restored to Service after the agonising disaster to Challenger. The use of telescopes and other instruments above the atmosphere has thrown revealing light upon the Universe. And although mankind has yet to travel beyond the Moon, his robot emissaries are spreading his quest across the Solar System.
Now, eight years after its orginal publication, a revised and updated edition of The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Space Technology is released to take account of the startling developments of the eighties. Much has happened in the intervening years: China, Japan and Europe have emerged äs major space powers, glasnost has seen our knowledge of the Soviet space Programme, and particularly the Soviet Shuttle, expand prodigiously; SDI research has been initiated; the US space Station Freedom is being planned forthe 1990s. This book is uniquely able to provide both the historical perspective needed to understand the genesis of space technology, and the facts and figures on current programmes and likely future developments, which should culminate in a manned flight to Mars early next Century. Superbly illustrated with colour artwork, photographs, and explanatorydiagrams, itis probably the finest single volume history of the space age yet published.

The Japanese and Indian Space Programmes: Two Roads into Space
Harvey, Brian
The Japanese and Indian Space Programme* tells the story of two nations and the contrasting development of their space programmes.
Japan became the fourth nation in space in 1970, having begun its commitment to a space programme as early as the 1950s. Since then, Japan has become one of the most successful spacefaring nations, having flown space probes to the Moon, Mars and comet Halley.
India's space programme is a unique attempt to put space research at the service of economic development. India has built rockets to place in orbit sophisticated satellites for use in weather forecasting, cyclone warning, Earth resources observations, Communications and basic education.
Asia will be the leading region for space development in the early 21 st Century. This book compares and contrasts the Japanese and Indian space programmes, how they have developed and how they are likely to proceed in the future. It teils the story of the visionaries, the scientists and the engineers, with their successes, adventures, disappointments and dreams.

The Magic and Menace of SpaceShipOne
Binnie, Brian (Astronaut, Test Pilot, Program Manager)
With a forword by Burt Rutan, founder of Scaled Composites and designer of SpaceShipOne.

In 2004 the history of manned spaceflight took another step forward when the first privately funded, privately built and privately piloted craft reached space... not once, but twice
within five days to claim the Ansari XPRIZE.
Here in the authentic words of the second of those pilots, whose world record-breaking flight to 70 miles clinched the prize, is the history of SpaceShipOne's development, testing, and eventual triumph. Never-before-seen photos, diagrams and insider explanations make the successes and failures - the magic and the menace - come to life.
More than that, it's the story of a personal arc that took a Scottish kid out of the highlands, into naval aviation, to test pilot... and finally on a nail-biting, all-or-nothing gamble into that black sky.
Only five manned craft hang in the National Air and Space Museum's "Milestones of Flight" Hall. SpaceShipOne is among them. This book tells why.

The Return
Aldrin, Buzz (Astronaut, Veteran of the first moon landing) - Barnes, John
"Reunited with award-winning SF writer Barnes (Encounter with Tiber), Aldrin, the second man to walk on the Moon, imagines a near future when the space program is in the hands of competing private corporations. In association with ShareSpace, headed by ex-astronaut CEO Scott Blackstone, NASA is offering privileged civilians the opportunity to ride as "Citizen Observers" on space shuttle missions. The third such celebrity in space, basketball legend MJ (Michael James), has scarcely reached orbit when he and a crew member are killed in what appears to be a bizarre accident. Culminating in an emergency crash landing on Easter Island, this tragedy puts the future of the entire space program in jeopardy. Overnight, Blackstone becomes the scapegoat and--sued by MJ's mother for over $1 billion--is fired. When, mysteriously, Blackstone finds that no lawyer will take his case, his brother, Nick, v-p of rocket builder Republic Wright, revives the childhood bond of the Mars Four (Nick; Scott; Scott's ex-wife, celebrity attorney Thalia, mother of their 10-year-old son; and Eddie Killeret, Nick's counterpart at rival Curtiss Aerospace)--and persuades Thalia to represent Scott. Despite anonymous threats, the case turns in their favor when the media focus on the explosion of a Pakistani proton bomb that turns the entire ionosphere into a super Van Allen belt, knocking out all existing satellites. Enter an enigmatic figure from a secret agency tying everything to a Chinese conspiracy. After three of the Mars Four go into space on a mission to rescue the crew of a disabled space station, fade to sunset as they reunite at the beach cottage of their youth."

The Saturn V F-1 Engine: Powering Apollo into History
Young, Anthony
The book focuses on the design, testing and manufacture of the F-1 engine, but also covers its incorporation into the first stage of the Saturn V and in-flight record. It concludes with an examination of what might have been, if the F-1 had not been discarded, together with the Saturn V, at the conclusion of the Apollo program. The account draws on original documents and interviews with engineers and managers, and is illustrated by many never-before-published photographs, both colour and monochrome. The intention is for this to be the definitive account of the development of this most powerful of rocket engines. As NASA is developing an evolved version of the hydrogen-burning J-2 engine for use in the forthcoming Ares launch vehicles, the author includes development of the J-2 engine within the context of the Saturn V development, thus bringing rocket engine development up to the present and thus provide this book with a long shelf life.

The Secret of Apollo: Systems Management in American and European Space Programs
Johnson, Stephen B.
First Edition. First Printing.

How does one go about organizing something as complicated as a strategic-missile or space-exploration program? Stephen B. Johnson here explores the answer - Systems Management - in a groundbreaking study that involves Air Force planners, scientists, technical specialists, and, eventually, bureaucrats. Taking a comparative approach, Johnson focuses on the theory or intellectual history of "Systems engineering" as such, its origins in the air force's Cold War ICBM efforts, and its migration to not only NASA but the European Space Agency.
Exploring the history and politics of aero-space development and weapons procurement, Johnson examines how scientists and engineers created the systems management process to coordinate large-scale technology development, and how managers and military officers gained control of that process. "Those funding the race demanded results," Johnson explains. "In response, developrnent organizations created what few expected and what even fewer wanted - a bureaucracy for innovation. To begin to understand this apparent contradiction in terms, we must first understand the exacting nature of space technologies and the concerns of those who create them."

The Space Shuttle Decision 1965 - 1972: History of the Space Shuttle Volume 1
Heppenheimer, T. A.
First Edition.

Basing his work on virtually untapped NASA archives, T. A. Heppenheimer has produced the first two volumes of a definitive three-volume history of the space shuttle. In this first volume, Heppenheimer looks back at the shuttle's technical antecedents such as the X-15 rocket plane and rocket booster technologies, and illuminates the principal personalities involved in the space shuttle decision and their motivations. He traces NASA's evolving program goals, the technical calculations, political maneuvering, and fiscal constraints, and explains the myriad designs that preceded the shuttle concept. In closing, he looks in detail at the circumstances leading to the politically charged development decision of 1972.

The Story of the Space Shuttle
Harland, David M.
First Edition
Springer-Praxis Books in Astronomy and Space Sciences

The US Space Shuttle, which entered service in 1981, was conceived as a reusable spacecraft providing cheap access to Iow Earth orbit, and to supersede expendable launch vehicles. In spite of the Challenger and Columbia disasters, it is arguably the most successful spacecraft ever developed.
The Story of the Space Shuttle explains the scientific contribution that it has made to the international space programme, focusing on the Shuttle's utility rather than its development. Each chapter is devoted to a specific type of operation, and the missions are discussed in this context. Missions to Mir, Hubble and, more recently, the Shuttle's role in the assembly of the International Space Station are described, as are the the activities leading to the resumption of operations following the loss of Columbia. The book concludes with a look at possible future concepts for a partly or totally reusable space vehicle to replace the Shuttle.
With The Story of the Space Shuttle, David Harland provides the definitive work about this amazing project.

To Reach the High Frontier: A History of U.S. Launch Vehicles
Launius, Roger D. - Jenkins, Dennis R. (both editors)
First Edition - First Printing

Access —no single word better describes the primary concern of the exploration and development of space. Every participant in space activities - civil, military, scientific, or commercial - needs affordable, reliable, frequent, and flexible access to space. To Reach the High Frontier details the histories of the various launch vehicles developed in the United States since the birth of the space age in 1957. Even with four decades of public and private effort, access to space remains problematic. The core of the U.S.'s present launch capability, the Atlas,Titan, and Delta launchers, though much evolved, originated as military ballistic missiles in the 1950s. In fact, all U.S. launchers, including NASA's Saturn and Space Shuttle Systems, have involved significant government input, äs well as the efforts of private contractors. The technical challenge of reaching space with chemical rockets, the high costs associated with space launch, the long lead times necessary for scheduling flights, and the poor reliability of the rockets themselves show launch vehicles to be the space program's most difficult challenge.
This book presents case studies in the history of all the major rockets built by the United States. Each study has been written by a specialist knowledgeable about the vehicle described and places each system in the larger context of the history of space flight. To Reach the High Frontier promises to aid in the effort to resolve the launch vehicle problem, offering a comprehensive history and analysis of rocket development and suggesting remarkable new directions for future efforts.

Two Sides of the Moon: Our Story of the Cold War Space Race
Leonov, Alexei (Cosmonaut) - Scott, David (Astronaut) - with Christine Toomey
Growing up on either side of the Iron Curtain, Alexei Leonov and David Scott shared the same dream - to become a pilot. Excelling at flying, they were chosen by their countries' burgeoning space programmes to be part of the greatest technological race ever - to land a man on the moon. Cosmonaut Alexei Leonov became the first man to walk in space. He won a place in history, but almost lost his life. In 1966, David Scott and Neil Armstrong were seconds away from dying as Gemini 8 spun violently out of control across space. Both men survived against dramatic odds and Scott went on to command the most complex expedition in the history of space exploration, Apollo 15. When the US and USSR space programmes were eventually brought together in the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, Scott and Leonov finally met. The project marked the end of the Cold War silence and started a friendship that would last for decades.

U.S. Space Gear: Outfitting the Astronaut
Kozloski, Lillian D.
From the earliest days of flight, design of comfortable yet protective flight clothing has proved almost as great a challenge as the creation of airplanes and spacecraft. With more than 150 illustartions, this volume shows how researchers and designers culled life-saving ideas from sources both expected and obscure: Deep sea divers' equipment, pressurised inner tubes, tomato worms, and medieval armor... The man on the books cover is Mercury Astronaut Gordon Cooper wearing a MA-9 suit.

We Have Capture: Tom Stafford and the Space Race
TOP
Stafford, Thomas P. - Cassutt, Michael
What an amazing career. Tom Stafford attained the highest speed ever reached by a test pilot (28,547 mph), carried a cosmonaut’s coffin with Soviet Secretary Leonid Brezhnev, led the team that designed the sequence of missions leading to the original lunar landing, and drafted the original specifications for the B-2 stealth bomber on a piece of hotel stationery. But his crowning achievement was surely his role as America’s unofficial space ambassador to the Soviet Union during the darkest days of the Cold War.

In this lively memoir written with Michael Cassutt, Stafford begins by recounting his early successes as a test pilot, Gemini and Apollo astronaut, and USAF general. As President Nixon's stand-in at the 1971 Soviet funeral for three cosmonauts, he opened the door to the possibility of cooperation in space between Russians and Americans. Stafford's Apollo-Soyuz team was the first group of Americans to work at the cosmonaut training center, and also the first to visit Baikonur, the top-secret Soviet launch center, in 1974. His 17 July 1975 “handshake in space” with Soviet commander Alexei Leonov (who became a lifelong friend) proved to the world that the two opposing countries could indeed work successfully together.

Stafford has continued in this leadership role right up to the present, participating in designing and evaluating the Space Shuttle, Mir, and the International Space Station. He is truly an American hero who personifies the broadest spirit of exploration and cooperation.

Weltraumstürmer: Wernher von Braun und der Wettlauf zum Mond
Kulke, Ulli
Erstausgabe
