Flights to Desaster
Brookes, Andrew
Statistically speaking air travel is amongst the safest forms of transport — indeed, more people die in England and Wales in an average year from falling down stairs than in air disasters. Despite this, airline accidents do occur and because of the size of the modern passenger-carrying Jet and the number of passengers carried, today they regularly hit the headlines. These accidents can arise from a whole range of factors — from mechanical failure through to human error or even through deliberate actions on the part of terrorists.
Flights to Disaster is Andrew Brookes third book on air disasters. The author has drawn on his experience as a Professional pilot with the Royal Air Force and from when he was responsible for the multi-engine, trainer and rotary wing aircraft flight safety desks in the Ministry of Defence to explain the background to a number of the most significant and controversial aviation accidents iip to the present day. Amongst the episodes described are historically significant crashes such as the fatal World War 2 accidents involving Air Chief Marshal Leigh-Mallory, the German Minister of Armaments and Munitions, Todt, and the crash where Buddy Holly lost his life, as well as more recent incidents such as the 1994 crash of Chinook ZD576 in Scotland, the loss of the Challenger Space Shuttle and the shooting down of the Iran Air Airbus.
This book will appeal to all those interested in aviation. It explains the reasons why airlines do the things that they do today in the interests of aircraft safety.
