Collision on Tenerife
The How and Why of the World's Worst Aviation Disaster
Ziomek, Jon - Hopkins, Caroline
First Edition
This multiyear project began when Jon Ziomek met Caroline and Warren Hopkins and learned that they were survivors of the Tenerife disaster. All agreed that a book could be written based on their unique experience. As a starting point, Mrs. Hopkins gave Mr. Ziomek her detailed personal diary. Other survivors were interviewed and included in the narrative, along with an explanation of events in the cockpits of the two jets. Psychologists and behavioral experts contributed to the discussion, too, as Caroline and Warren and other survivors struggled with the long-term impact of their experience. The Tenerife disaster led to a review of international aviation rules, and also helped develop a new subfield of psychology: the long-term effects on victims, and their families, of surviving a catastrophe.
