Hellmuth Hirth was one of, if not the most notable pioneer aviator in Germany. He was chief pilot and head engineer for Edmund Rumpler, then technical director for the Albatros factory. He won numerous competitions during the years 1911 to 1914 and held German and international records in speed, reliability and altitude. During WW I he was awarded the Iron Cross Second Class as part of the Boelcke fighter squadron. He was the founder of the Hirth Motoren GmbH and co-founder of Mahle Gmbh. This book is the autobiographical account of Hirth's experiences from childhood, through his time with Thomas Edison in the US, and into his adventures in aviation up until the outbreak of the Great War.
