Rockwell
The Heritage of North American
Yenne, Bill
Rockwell International is a multi-billion dollar, multi-industry corporation employing over 100,000 people at more than 100 facilities in two dozen countries worldwide. It is one of the world's industrial giants, but it is also one of the most important companies in the history of aviation.
Rockwell International today carries on the legacy of North American Aviation, a Company which, between 1934 and 1967, built more military aircraft than any other plane-maker in United States history - including 41,000 during World War II alone. Among these were the B-25 Mitchell, the airplane that Doolittle used to bomb Tokyo; the AT-6 Texan, the most important trainer of all time and the P-51 Mustang, the greatest piston-engined fighter in history.
After World War II, North American took the lead in high performance jet aircraft with the development of the F-86 Sabre Jet, the first fighter to break the sound barrier (some people say the first aircraft ofany type) and the plane with more aerial combat victo-ries than all other jet fighters combined.
North American and Rockwell have also played an essential role in the American space program, having been responsible for the Apollo spacecraft that took man to the moon and the Space Shuttle Orbiting Vehicle that made manned spaceflight routine. Indeed, Rockwell built the manned spacecraft which have carried all butfive of the more than one hundred Americans to fly in space.
The story of North American and Rockwell is one of the most exciting chapters in aerospace history and it is vividly brought to life in these colorful pages.
