Chapters outline the theory and dynamics of supersonic flight and chart the history of attempts to break the sound barrier. Also described are other SST (supersonic transport) projects which never progressed beyond the model stage and the single design which did, Russia's Tupolev Tu 144 'Concordski'.
The book also considers what it takes to become a pilot of the world's fastest airliner. Specifications and data are included as well as a pilot's eye view of a flight from London to New York. Later chapters comment on Concorde's possible successors, including a look at suborbital flight. With reference to the official report, much consideration is given to the tragic event at Gonesse in July 2000 and the remedies subsequently applied.
The text is backed by a wealth of illustrations, colour photographs and charts; many reproduced from the archives of the manufacturers and operators British Airways and Air France.
