Flights of Terror
Aerial Hijack and Sabotage Since 1930
Gero, David
The first recorded case of a commercial airliner being unlawfuljy diverted from its intended destination occurred in February 1931 when a Pan American Fokker F.7 trimotor was commandeered by Peruvian revolutionaries. Since then, many hundreds of incidents have taken place, with one of the most recent being an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 767 wbich ended in disaster when it crashed into the sea after the hijackers forced it to fly on beyond its fuel range. This is the first reference book to detail hijackings, bombings and other hostile acts committed against commercial aircraft in a comprehensive manner. Many of these, such as the diverting of aircraft to Cuba, became so routine in the late 1960s and early 1970s that they often received only a passing mention by the press, and follow-up stories on the fate of the hijackers were in many cases non-existent. Other incidents, however, such as Lockerbie, have been fully documented by the world's media until long after they occurred. This meticulously researched account of these many and varied incidents is a companion volume to the author's best-selling book, Aviation Disasters.
