Take off
The Book of German Aerospace
Schmitz, Arno L.
A sequel to the volume published in 1976, GERMAN AEROSPACE INDUSTRY, and its predecessors of 1974, 1972, 1968/69 and 1966, this book is retitled to give an up-to-date look into developments in the world of German aerospace - and particularly industry.
Detailed accounts are given of the main areas of German aerospace activities, including
• the A 300 Airbus programme
• the MRCA/TORNADO Programme
• the ALPHA JET programme and much more besides.
Other developments discussed include the BO 105 Helicopter and its offshoots; MISSILES; AERO ENGINES for civil and military uses, etc. Using various examples, the book also goes behind the scene in the GERMAN EQUIPMENT INDUSTRY. Finally, SPACE FLIGHT is considered, mainly in connection with the European SPACELAB laboratory. A report entitled AIRCRAFT DEVELOPMENTS UNDER THE LUFTHANSA CRANE EMBLEM introduces the post 1919 designs which became world famous. Lufthansa offers an interim report on the new AIRBUS development, which has also occurred under the crane emblem. TAKE OFF, the book of German aerospace, also surveys the AIRBUS family and considers the forthcoming development of a European passenger plane codenamed JET.
There is also news for the reader on the concept studies for a new MILITARY TRANSPORT and on work on pilotless aircraft (DRONES and RPVs.) Finally, a tour through 75 YEARS OF GERMAN FLYING SPORT wakens nostalgic memories of the sporting and technical achievements in German gliding and powered flight. Linked with this, there is a realistic appraisal of the OPPORTUNITIES FOR GERMAN LIGHT AIRCRAFT CONSTRUCTION. TAKE OFF cannot cover everything. But it can and does use examples to give a full picture of the performance of the German aerospace industry in international competition.
