Boeing
An Aircraft Album
Munson, Kenneth - Swanborough, Gordon
The introduction of the controversial Boeing 747 'jumbo Jet' into airline Service in 1970 focused attention on one of the oldest and largest, and undoubtedly one of the most successful, companies in the US aerospace industry. From the two little wood-and-fabric B & W seaplanes built in 1916 by William Boeing and Conrad Westervelt has grown the giant enterprise that today is one of the world's leaders in the production of large commercial jet airliners, helicopters, missiles and space vehicles.
Many aircraft of Boeing design already occupy a place in aviation's hall of fame: the little P-12 and P-26 fighters of the inter-war years, the Monomail and the all-metal Boeing 247 airliners of the 1930s, the war-time Fortress and Superfortress, and America's first production jet bomber, the B-47 Strato-Jet. All these appear, within the widely-diversified range of Boeing aeroplanes covering more than half a Century, in the formal now established for the series. The book contains about 180 illustrations.
