Supermarine Spitfire Mks VI-F.24
Combat Legend
Caygill, Peter
Having already achieved everlasting fame in the Battle of Britain, the Spitfire was developed more than any other fighter of the Second World War. As a result of the work by Joe Smith and his team at Supermarine later marks of Spitfire, powered by the two-stage supercharged Merlin and, later, the Griffon, were more than a match for advanced versions of the Messerschmitt Bf 109 and Focke-Wulf 190. Such was its phenomenal performance, it was to continue in Service in the photo reconnaissance role until April 1954.
The ultimate Spitfire developments were the Spiteful (and its naval equivalent the Seafang) and the Seafire FR.47 which saw service with the Fleet Air Arm in Korea in1950
