Critical to the aircraft of the RAF was the Merlin engine, built only by Rolls-Royce initially and subsequently under licence by Ford in Britain and Packard in the USA.
And crucial to the continuous production in increasing numbers and to an ever higher specification was the man running Rolls-Royce, Ernest, later Lord, Hives.
This is the story of that man's immense contribution, told by Peter Pugh, the historian who wrote the trilogy of Rolls-Royce in the late 1990s, The Magic of a Name, and Sir lan Lloyd, who wrote The Merlin at War in the late 1940s.
