In the autumn of 1940 the Heinkel He 111 was one of the major threats facing the British Isles.
It was the backbone of the Luftwaffe's bombing arm and as such was the stategic implement designed to smash the airfields of RAF Fighter Command and pound the citles and industries of Britain into submission.
Heinkel's bomber had already seen action in Spain, over Poland and in attack on Scandinavia, the Low Countries and France, but in the Battle of Britain it was found wanting in the face of determined fighter defence.
As the expected replacements did not materialise, the He 111 had to soldier on, showing its versatility as a torpedo-bomber, guided bomb carrier, paratroop transport, glidertug and even provisional night fighter on the Eastern Front, serving the Reich until the very end.
