ON 16 JUNE 1963 Soviet cosmonaut Valentine Tereshkova became the tenth person and first woman to orbit the Earth. It would be a further two decades before the second woman, also Russian, and then the first American female astronaut entered space. During the 1980s and 1990s over 50 females from around the world were selected for spaceflight training, with 40 achieving at least one flight. The road to space for women has been long and difficult but their commitment and contribution has been as dedicated as that of their male colleagues.
