Osprey Aircraft of the Aces - 119
VF-9 was one of the many wartime squadrons that emerged from the US Navy's rapid expansion after the attack on Pearl Harbor. One of the langest serving, and most successful, US Navy fighter units, VF-9 was initially thrown into action in the F4F Wildcat before becoming one of the first squadrons to take on the F6F Hellcat äs its Standard mount. The unit quickly proved the Grumman fighter's superiority over the vaunted Imperial Japanese Navy's A6M Zero-sen. In the course of two combat tours VF-9 pilots claimed 250 enemy aeroplanes shot down and produced 20 aces. The unit's leading ace was Lt Eugene Valencia, whose 'finger-four' division became famous äs the most successful US fighter team in Naval Aviation during World War 2, claiming a combined total of 43 Japanese aircraft. With original photographs and illustrated colour plates, this volume focuses on the aces of the second-highest scoring US Navy Hellcat squadron, from the early days of holding the famous Zero-sens at bay, to the time of achieving total dominion of the skies over the Pacific.
