Smith, Geoffrey G.
2nd Edition.
One of the most interesting books on early jet propulsion with text dated back to the first edition of 1942. Includes (among others) articles on "Tailless aircraft and flying wings" and on the Caproni-Campini CC1 and CC2 jet-design: The Caproni's jet engine compressor was not driven by a turbine but by a radial engine. The description in this book is the first mentioning I found in literature of a variable area thrust nozzle design and also of a possbility for thrust vectoring! The author's opinion at the time on this feature was: "...it is doubtful if facility to give direction to the jet is a feature of importance..."
Another strange but true design was a 2.300 h.p. steam driven turboprop engine for large flying boats developed by Great Lakes Aircraft together with General Electric...
