The Space Shuttle Decision 1965 - 1972: History of the Space Shuttle Volume 1
Heppenheimer, T. A.
First Edition.

Basing his work on virtually untapped NASA archives, T. A. Heppenheimer has produced the first two volumes of a definitive three-volume history of the space shuttle. In this first volume, Heppenheimer looks back at the shuttle's technical antecedents such as the X-15 rocket plane and rocket booster technologies, and illuminates the principal personalities involved in the space shuttle decision and their motivations. He traces NASA's evolving program goals, the technical calculations, political maneuvering, and fiscal constraints, and explains the myriad designs that preceded the shuttle concept. In closing, he looks in detail at the circumstances leading to the politically charged development decision of 1972.

The Story of the Space Shuttle
Harland, David M.
First Edition
Springer-Praxis Books in Astronomy and Space Sciences

The US Space Shuttle, which entered service in 1981, was conceived as a reusable spacecraft providing cheap access to Iow Earth orbit, and to supersede expendable launch vehicles. In spite of the Challenger and Columbia disasters, it is arguably the most successful spacecraft ever developed.
The Story of the Space Shuttle explains the scientific contribution that it has made to the international space programme, focusing on the Shuttle's utility rather than its development. Each chapter is devoted to a specific type of operation, and the missions are discussed in this context. Missions to Mir, Hubble and, more recently, the Shuttle's role in the assembly of the International Space Station are described, as are the the activities leading to the resumption of operations following the loss of Columbia. The book concludes with a look at possible future concepts for a partly or totally reusable space vehicle to replace the Shuttle.
With The Story of the Space Shuttle, David Harland provides the definitive work about this amazing project.

The Voyages of Columbia: The First True Spaceship
Lewis, Richard S.
A few minutes past 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, April 14,1981. Columbia has begun its 37th orbit of the Earth, an orbit that will end at Edwards Air Force Base in southern California. Sighs at Houston, cheers at Edwards: Columbia was coming home. At Edwards, crowds surge up to a mile-long security rope strung along the hot, dry lake bed. Suddenly, Columbia appears over the lake like some enormous bird coming home to roost. A clamor rises as the big glider flares and settles down on the runway. Columbia rolls toastop. It is10:20: 52 A.M., PST and a new era has begun. The world's first true spaceship - a reusable craft that will travel into space again and again - has proved a success.
This lavishly illustrated volume by one of America's foremost science writers presents the whole story of America's Space Shuttle program, from early designs and planning to the four successful orbital test flights and the first five operational missions. Filled with the facts and intriguing details that have made America's space programs such an awesome and exciting venture, the book offers every reader a gripping description of one of the great chapters in human history.
Richard S. Lewis opens his journalistic account of the evolution of the first true spaceship by tracing the engineering develop-ment of the shuttle in depth, starting with its initial concept äs a fully reusable, space-adapted airplane. He then describes how budgetary and political considerations led to the current Version, a partly reusable, rocket-boosted glider.
Lewis explains how NASA officials and engineers came to realize that the develop-ment of the space shuttle would be the most complex and challenging technical problem of the space age. Several chapters teil of the frustrating technical setbacks encountered, and the triumphant breakthroughs that gradually brought Columbia to life. The reader is then treated to an inside look at the exciting days of the shuttle test flights, äs well äs operational flights by Columbia and by Challenger, the second shuttle craft.
Endlessly fascinating, The Voyages of Columbia records, äs no other book has, the dramatic birth of a new era in space exploration. It is a time which, thanks to its technological breakthroughs, promises rieh benefits for all mankind äs we approach the twenty-first Century.

To Reach the High Frontier: A History of U.S. Launch Vehicles
Launius, Roger D. - Jenkins, Dennis R. (both editors)
First Edition - First Printing

Access —no single word better describes the primary concern of the exploration and development of space. Every participant in space activities - civil, military, scientific, or commercial - needs affordable, reliable, frequent, and flexible access to space. To Reach the High Frontier details the histories of the various launch vehicles developed in the United States since the birth of the space age in 1957. Even with four decades of public and private effort, access to space remains problematic. The core of the U.S.'s present launch capability, the Atlas,Titan, and Delta launchers, though much evolved, originated as military ballistic missiles in the 1950s. In fact, all U.S. launchers, including NASA's Saturn and Space Shuttle Systems, have involved significant government input, äs well as the efforts of private contractors. The technical challenge of reaching space with chemical rockets, the high costs associated with space launch, the long lead times necessary for scheduling flights, and the poor reliability of the rockets themselves show launch vehicles to be the space program's most difficult challenge.
This book presents case studies in the history of all the major rockets built by the United States. Each study has been written by a specialist knowledgeable about the vehicle described and places each system in the larger context of the history of space flight. To Reach the High Frontier promises to aid in the effort to resolve the launch vehicle problem, offering a comprehensive history and analysis of rocket development and suggesting remarkable new directions for future efforts.

Two Sides of the Moon: Our Story of the Cold War Space Race
Leonov, Alexei (Cosmonaut) - Scott, David (Astronaut) - with Christine Toomey
Growing up on either side of the Iron Curtain, Alexei Leonov and David Scott shared the same dream - to become a pilot. Excelling at flying, they were chosen by their countries' burgeoning space programmes to be part of the greatest technological race ever - to land a man on the moon. Cosmonaut Alexei Leonov became the first man to walk in space. He won a place in history, but almost lost his life. In 1966, David Scott and Neil Armstrong were seconds away from dying as Gemini 8 spun violently out of control across space. Both men survived against dramatic odds and Scott went on to command the most complex expedition in the history of space exploration, Apollo 15. When the US and USSR space programmes were eventually brought together in the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, Scott and Leonov finally met. The project marked the end of the Cold War silence and started a friendship that would last for decades.

U.S. Space Gear: Outfitting the Astronaut
Kozloski, Lillian D.
From the earliest days of flight, design of comfortable yet protective flight clothing has proved almost as great a challenge as the creation of airplanes and spacecraft. With more than 150 illustartions, this volume shows how researchers and designers culled life-saving ideas from sources both expected and obscure: Deep sea divers' equipment, pressurised inner tubes, tomato worms, and medieval armor... The man on the books cover is Mercury Astronaut Gordon Cooper wearing a MA-9 suit.

We Have Capture: Tom Stafford and the Space Race
Stafford, Thomas P. - Cassutt, Michael
What an amazing career. Tom Stafford attained the highest speed ever reached by a test pilot (28,547 mph), carried a cosmonaut’s coffin with Soviet Secretary Leonid Brezhnev, led the team that designed the sequence of missions leading to the original lunar landing, and drafted the original specifications for the B-2 stealth bomber on a piece of hotel stationery. But his crowning achievement was surely his role as America’s unofficial space ambassador to the Soviet Union during the darkest days of the Cold War.

In this lively memoir written with Michael Cassutt, Stafford begins by recounting his early successes as a test pilot, Gemini and Apollo astronaut, and USAF general. As President Nixon's stand-in at the 1971 Soviet funeral for three cosmonauts, he opened the door to the possibility of cooperation in space between Russians and Americans. Stafford's Apollo-Soyuz team was the first group of Americans to work at the cosmonaut training center, and also the first to visit Baikonur, the top-secret Soviet launch center, in 1974. His 17 July 1975 “handshake in space” with Soviet commander Alexei Leonov (who became a lifelong friend) proved to the world that the two opposing countries could indeed work successfully together.

Stafford has continued in this leadership role right up to the present, participating in designing and evaluating the Space Shuttle, Mir, and the International Space Station. He is truly an American hero who personifies the broadest spirit of exploration and cooperation.

Weltraumstürmer: Wernher von Braun und der Wettlauf zum Mond
Kulke, Ulli
Erstausgabe

Women in Space: Following Valentina
Shayler, David J. - Moule, Ian A
First Edition
Springer-Praxis Books in Space Exploration

ON 16 JUNE 1963 Soviet cosmonaut Valentine Tereshkova became the tenth person and first woman to orbit the Earth. It would be a further two decades before the second woman, also Russian, and then the first American female astronaut entered space. During the 1980s and 1990s over 50 females from around the world were selected for spaceflight training, with 40 achieving at least one flight. The road to space for women has been long and difficult but their commitment and contribution has been as dedicated as that of their male colleagues.
The story of women in space charts the pioneering aeronautical developments of the early decades of the 20th Century to the very start of human space exploration, and on to the Shuttle and space Station era. However, the story of women in space is not just about those who fly the missions, but also of those who work on the ground, or stay at horne with the family.
In Women In Space - Following Valentina David Shayler and lan Moule chronicle these missions into space, from the historic Vostok 6 in June 1963 to the tragedy of STS-107 40 years on. From the first pioneering steps, through the frustration and disappointments of the 1960s and 1970s, the triumphs and tragedies of the 1980s, to the current International Space Station Programme, women have played a crucial role in the space Programme, and this book celebrates their achievements.
