The birth of the Zero fighter marked the beginning of a new era in naval aviation. Because of its extraordinary maneuverability and range, the Zero quickly established itself as the world's finest carrier-based fighter. It led the attack on Pearl Harbor, and dominated the Pacific in the early days of World War II. For a time it seemed invincible, and to many it symbolized Japan's conduct of the war.
This book is the complete story of the Zero as told by its chief designer, Dr. Jiro Horikoshi. It begins with a brief account of his early life and training as an aeronautical engineer. Dr. Horikoshi then discusses the problems he faced in the 1930s as he attempted to develop fighter aircraft in Japan that were on a par with those of the Western world.
As war grew closer, Dr. Horikoshi and the Mitsubishi design staff were challenged by the Japanese Navy to develop a "wonder" fighter - an aircraft with performance far exceeding that of any fighter previously built. After months of work, and several key breakthroughs, the first prototype Zero was ready for flight testing. Dr. Horikoshi describes the joy of that first successful flight, the tragic deaths of two test pilots on subsequent flights, and the constant intense efforts of the design team to improve the aircraft.
When the Zero finally entered combat over China in August 1940, it blasted all opposition from the skies. Because U.S. authorities discounted early reports on the Zero, its appearance over Pearl Harbor came as a complete surprise. Thereafter, however, the Zero could not be ignored. Not until the Battle of Midway in June 1942 were the Allies able to retaliate successfully in the air.
Inevitably, in the later stages of the war, the Zero was forced into a defensive posture for which it was not suited. New U.S. fighters were introduced into combat, and Japanese resources were badly depleted. The atomic bombings clearly revealed the folly of continued military action and Dr. Horikoshi tells of the subsequent surrender.
This book, then, is both the saga of the development and performance of a great airplane and a personal account of how a famous aircraft designer went about his task. For a Western reader, it is all the more interesting because it views World War II from a Japanese perspective.
Jiro Horikoshi, who served for many years as chief aircraft designer for Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, now lives near Tokyo.

'Shark Squadron Pilot' is a graphic Illustration of the realities of the air war in the Western Desert. Bert Horden joined No. 112 'Shark' Squadron early in 1942 and was soon initiated into the ground attack role of the 'Kittys'. With their garish shark's mouths painted on their aircraft No. 112 Squadron wreaked havoc on the German Afrika Corps as the war in the Western Desert rose to its climax. Inflicting terrible damage with machine gun fire on soft skinned targets, like convoys of trucks, and causing significant damage with their underslung bombs on the hard skinned Panzers, the aircraft of '112 Squadron soon became well known to Rommel's troops.
Using his diary and flying log book to preserve the accuracy and immediacy of the events Bert Horden has written a superb account of desert flying . In places extremely graphic and throughout well illustrated, 'Shark Squadron Pilot' will be an important contribution to the recorded history of the Second World War.

Seit dem Erstflug der legendären Boeing 707 im Jahr 1954 steht der Name Boeing stellvertretend für den Einsatz von Düsenflugzeugen im Luftverkehr. Dennoch hielt sich das Unternehmen lange zurück, mit der Boeing 737 in das Kurzstreckengeschäft einzusteigen. Als die Fertigung der »Baby-Boeing« Anfang 1965 anlief, schien die Konkurrenz den Flugzeugbauern aus Seattle bereits davongeflogen zu sein. Doch innerhalb kürzester Zeit mauserte sich die 737 zum unbestrittenen Bestseller unter den Verkehrsflugzeugen. Bis 1994 gingen weit mehr als 3000 Bestellungen bei Boeing ein. Ein wichtiger Grund für diesen Erfolg: Der neue Jet war bewußt konventionell und unkompliziert entworfen worden, so daß auch kleinere Fluglinien kein wartungsintensives und für »Kinderkrankheiten« anfälliges »Hightech«-Gerät zu befürchten hatten. Inzwischen fällt gut ein Drittel aller gefertigten Boeing-Jets auf die 737. Täglich fliegen weltweit rund eine Million Passagiere über eine Entfernung von insgesamt acht Millionen Kilometer mit dem erfolgreichen »Kraftei«, das im dichten Flugverkehr in den USA und Europa ebenso zuhause ist wie auf den wenig besuchten Flugstrecken Afrikas und Asiens.

For the first time in the English language and following years of research, this book analyses the Camouflage and markings of the Aeronautica Nazionale Repubblicana (ANR), the Fascist air force formed following the wake of Italy's capitulation to the Allies in 1943, and an often overlooked aspect of Italian airpower during the Second World War.
Fighting alongside the Luftwaffe to the bitter end in Northern Italy, the ANR was equipped with the German Messerschmitt Bf 109 fighter as well as a range of Italian fighters, bombers, torpedo and transport ajrcraft - all of which are examined by the authors with the aid of hundreds of photographs showing the Camouflage and markings Systems adopted by unit and individual pilots.
In a 'photographic analysis through speculation and research' the authors - recognised authorities in their field - explain the evolution of various units such as the Squadriglia Complementare 'Montefusco', the 1° and 2° Gruppo Caccia which were equipped with the Fiat G.55, Macchi C.205 and Messerschmitt Bf 109 fighters, and the Gruppo Aerosiluranti 'Buscaglia' which flew the SIAI S.M.79. Other aircraft are studied such äs the SIAI S.81 and SIAI S.82 which equipped the ANR transport units and second-line aircraft such as the Avia FI.3, Breda 25, Reggiane Re.2005, Macchi C.200, Saiman 202, SAI 7, Cant Z 1007, SIAI S.79, Caproni Ca.164 and IMAM Ro.41.
This heavily illustrated and highly detailed work of reference contains more than 400 rare and, often previously unseen photographs and these are accompanied by a clear and concise text with some 40 colour* profiles and 'in action' colour graphics, 23 colour plan views and 40 colour plates illustrating ANR markings and codes.
Ferdinande D'Amico and Gabriele Valentini are acknowledged experts on the aircraft of the Italian air forces of World War Two. From the time of its appearance in 1939 the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 was one of the best fighter aircraft of the Second World War - a masterpiece produced by chief designer Kurt Tank. In 1943 he developed a new fighter aircraft based on this successful concept. The project soon deviated far from the original Fw 190 concept and as an honor to the designer it was designated the Ta 152. The great performance potential of this fighter was obvious from the very first prototypes of the Ta 152A and Ta 152C. Unfortunately, however, production was limited to a few examples. But at the same time Focke-Wulf was developing the Ta 152H high-altitude fighter which, powered by the Jumo 213E and equipped with a pressurized cockpit, was capable of reaching altitudes on the order of 35,000 feet and speeds in excess of 430 mph. A few Ta 152Hs saw action at the beginning of 1945 and they made an excellent impression on their pilots. Compared to the older fighters they exhibited significantly better flight characteristics and performance at high altitude. The Ta 152 could also stand up to the best Allied fighter aircraft, such as the American P-51 Mustang. On account of its unfamiliar shape the pilots of Bf 109s some-times mistook it for an enemy aircraft and attacked. The heavy Allied bombing at the end of the war prevented production from beginning as planned, and as a result only a very few Ta 152Hs could be delivered. With the aid of a large number of photographs - some previously unpublished - and drawings, this book details the development history of the Ta 152, one of the most advanced fighter aircraft of its day. But it also illustrates the hopelessness of Germany's efforts late in the war to deploy advanced aircraft in large numbers.

Desert Eagles tells the story of two American pilots who served in P-40 Kittyhawk fighter / bomber squadrons in the desert air force in 1942 before, during and after the Battle of El Alamein.
Both pilots, Hai Marting and Ed Miluck, had come to Britain in 1941 as volunteers of the American Eagle Squadrons. Both men kept diaries of their Middle East experiences and it is on these first-hand accounts that the book is based.
Hai Marting was shot down on the day the Battle of El Alamein began, captured and taken by the Germans to Athens. There he escaped and with the help of the Greek Resistance evaded recapture, being taken across the Aegean Sea to Turkey and journeying from there back to Cairo by train.
The two pilots were reunited in Cairo on 31 December, 1942. Marting was awarded the Military Cross in July 1943 but sadly was killed in an air crash in September 1943.
Humphrey Wynn has used his own knowledge of the period to provide a background to the diary material and has produced a fascinating account of these two mens' war.
