THE WAR IN THE AIR begins with an account of the years öfter World War l, and follows the growth and development of the airplane until its emergence as the primary combat weapon of World War II. Combat pictures follow the progress of the war in the air from its beginning in 1939 in Poland, through all areas of the world until the close of hostilities in 1945. Major Gurney has used the findings of the United States Strategie Bombing Survey to back up his thesis that air power was the decisive factor in the Allied victory over the Axis powers.
To help readers locate and identify every plane flown during World War II, a unique photo index has been devised. This consists of a Silhouette of each plane followed by the number of every page on which the plane is mentioned or pictured.
MAJOR GENE GURNEY entered military Service in 1943 and flew Consolidated B-24 "Liberator" bombers during World War II. After World War II he was a Counter Intelligence Spe-cial Agent. He is a Deputy Chief in the Office of Information of the Air Force and lives in Chantilly, Va.

One of the most famous single-seat warplanes of the Second World War, and built in larger numbers than any other American fighter; the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt was a notable contrast to many of its contemporaries. The heaviest single-engine fighter to reach large-scale service - twice as heavy as the British Spitfire or Japanese 'Zero' in some configurations - it featured a large air-cooled radial engine combined with an efficient turbo-compressor endowing it with excellent altitude performance. Despite its size and weight, one Thunderbolt model was the fastest Allied propeller-driven fighter to see combat. The firepower of its eight 'point-fifty' machine guns was reckoned by friend and foe alike to provide the most effective armament of any Second World War fighter. In addition to the narrative history dealing with many aspects of the Thunderbolt, this book includes details of service use by Allied air forces, accounts by pilots who flew this fighter in different theatres of war, and technical data on all Thunderbolt models. Illustrated with over 200 photographs, including colour reproductions, this book also features detailed plans of P-47s based on manufacturers' statistics and measurements of actual aircraft.

This fascinating book looks at a little-known aspect of World War II aviation history: the testing and use of captured Luftwaffe aircraft in the Soviet Air Force.
During the war a number of German reports indicated that captured aircraft were turned against their former masters - these reports seem, however, soon to have been forgotten, as no hard evidence was ever to be published by the Soviet side.
It has been generally known among the specialists on Soviet aviation history that a number of German aircraft were purchased by the USSR after the signing of the Ribbentrop-Molotov pact on 23 August 1939. For long the fate of these aircraft remained unknown. Recently, however, some details have been published which show the significant impact these aircraft had on Soviet aircraft design and production.
The author has consulted hundreds of Soviet books and articles, memoirs and biographies of Air Force commanders, pilots, engineers and designers and wherever possible the details have also been cross-checked against German accounts and documents. The result indicates clearly that an astonishingly rich first-hand experience of German aircraft was accumulated in the USSR, before, during and after the Second World War. With its many photographs - most of them not published in the West before - this book fills an important gap in World War II aviation literature.

But more importantly, it is the first indepth book devoted to the history of the V-1 and V-2 published in the English language authored by a German historian.
Dr. Hölsken's research included the compilation of hundreds of reports, photographs and firsthand interviews resulting in this definitive account of the German Air Force's V-1 and German Army's V-2. In addition Dr. Hölsken also documents the history of the little known V-3 and V-4 developed as the HDP and Rheinbote respectively. The author has also included the fascinating story of the piloted V-1. a special purpose piloted flying bomb advanced during the closing months of the war in Europe. This book is fully annotated and incorporates three appendices covering camouflage and markings, specifications and a list of surviving V-1s and V-2s throughout the world. An index is also provided.

Als Churchill im Jahre 1942 den Versenkungsbefehl gab, lag die „Tirpitz" im Trondheim-Fjord, bedrohte von hier aus die Flanke der Geleitzüge nach Rußland und band starke britische Kräfte. Eingeleitet wurde die zweijährige Jagd auf das größte Schlachtschiff, das während des Zweiten Weltkrieges in europäischen Gewässern operierte, durch schwere Angriffe der Royal Airforce. Ein exemplarisches und auch tragisches Schicksal, an dem der Autor demonstriert, daß die Rolle der Schlachtschiffe endgültig ausgespielt ist, kein einziges Mal konnte die „Tirpitz" ihre Schnelligkeit und Feuerkraft in einem Seegefecht zur Wirkung bringen und während sie im Trondheim-Fjord pausenlos angegriffen wurde, hatte Hitler bereits ihre Abwrackung beschlossen, was zum Rücktritt Raeders führte. Peillard rekonstruierte seinen Tatsachenbericht aus Hunderten von Interviews mit Engländern, Deutschen und Norwegern und aus dem reichen Material der deutschen und britischen Archive.
LEONCE PEILLARD,
geboren 1898 in Toulon, stammt aus einer Seemannsfamilie. Mit achtzehn Jahren geht er selbst zur See, kehrt drei Jahre später nach Frankreich zurück, um Jus und Handelswissenschaften zu studieren, und schlägt nach Abschluß seiner Studien endgültig die Marinelaufbahn ein, die er erst als Vierzigjähriger wieder aufgibt. Seither betätigt sich L. Peillard als Schriftsteller und Herausgeber. Seine Werke wurden mehrfach preigekrönt, er gilt als der erste Marineschriftsteller Frankreichs.

Die Geschichte der Wiener Neustädter Flugzeugwerke - WNF - reicht bis in die Kaiserzeit zurück, als hier u. a. die bekannten Jagdeinsitzer Albatros DII und DIII in mehreren hundert Stück in Lizenz erzeugt wurden.
Nach dem Ende des Ersten Weltkrieges im November 1918 war es mit der Flugzeugproduktion in Wiener Neustadt vorbei, und erst im Jahre 1936 wurde wieder versucht, in den Hallen der ehemaligen Flugzeugfabrik Maschinen zu reparieren und zu bauen.
Mit dem Einmarsch der deutschen Truppen im März 1938 ging es dann Schlag auf Schlag. Für die Wiener Neustädter ging es wirtschaftlich aufwärts, und bereits ein Jahr später war der erste Messerschmitt-Jäger - eine Me 109 E2 - fertig. F- und G-Typen folgten. Die WNF erreichten mit 15.000 Mitarbeitern den Höchststand an Personal.
1943, als die Alliierten die Ostmark bombardierten, galt der erste Angriff dem WNF-Werk in Wiener Neustadt. Das Werk versank in Schutt und Asche, Betrieb und Produktion wurden verlagert. Dennoch verließen bis Kriegsende 8545 Messerschmitt-Jäger das Werk. Ein Viertel aller Me 109 Jäger wurde in Österreich erzeugt, eine Tatsache, die weitgehend unbekannt ist.
